Weekly Fair - Buttala
What is your favorite place to buy fresh products and household items? Now there are so many places that serve the same purpose like; supermarkets, convenience stores, shops, fairs, etc. For us; it's always the city fair. Every Wendesday, the usually quiet streets of Buttala become chaotic and busy with the locals.
Usually, when I am at home, I accompanied my mom to get the daily household needs, and wholesale amount for our little shop. So, let me share my experience there, and small overview of the place.
Inside the fair
The route
There is a special place dedicated to the weekly fair. Around 5 years ago, the place was constructed properly with permanent roofing and concrete bases. It's within walking distance from the Buttala bus stand; precisely 550m away towards Monaragala.
As it's just near the main road, the roadside parking is prohibited for the safety. There are traffic officers to control the crowd most of the time. Anyway, there's a separate parking location has been allocated for free, and another paid private space.
- Opening days and hours: Every Wednesday from 07.30 a.m to 06.30 p.m
- Type of place: City Fair
- Location on Google Maps, on Steem Atlas
- Time of Visit : 2nd of April, 2025
The general practice in my area is, the main cities have one permanent day in the week, for the fair and everyone around the neighborhood uses it to fulfill their requirements. Not only to buy, but it provides the perfect place for the local businessmen, and farmers to solidify their living.
Inside the fair
The place is managed by Buttala Municipal Council, and anyone who wishes can pay rent and book a permanent place there. With the competition, now the place is almost filled.
We went there in the morning, but still it's crowded with the people. When comes near the fair you can hear the loud sounds of the sellers trying to attract people, negotiating with them etc. Beside the road you can see clothes shops espcially.
Let me tell you the main reasons we like here. It has almost every day today needs, mainly from vegetable and fruits to, fish and dry fish, spices, kitchen tools, cleaning products, clothes, and even toys. It’s like a mini-mall. And we can buy them for affordable prices; haggale a bit even. And the most important is, we have fresh products, and can choose the best ones from them.
So, let's see what we have there to buy.
Vegetabels
Our main reason for going to the fair was to buy fruits and vegetables. There are 100+ sellers even from outside cities, with all sorts of vegetable. The ones from local farmers, and also from Badulla, Welimada areas well. They are fresh, colorful, and much cheaper than in supermarkets.
Mostly the prices are same in every seller, so here are some images of the available items, and their prices.

So, that's it for today!! Until the next time! Enjoy!
Thank you.
Best Regards!
It makes me surprised that the price of vegetables is unchanged. We can't imagine that in Bangladesh. Not even a day later, the price changed within an hour.

No no, the prices are changing here as well. These prizes are average ones on that day... That's why I have mentioned the day of visit!
