From a Hobby of Flying Kites to Making Money

A Tanjungpinang resident's hobby of flying kites has earned him money. Eko, the man, profited from his hobby by selling kites of various designs.

Starting from his hobby of flying kites, Eko claims to have developed the ability to make various types of kites. He then ventured into selling kites.

"I saw it was kite season in Tanjungpinang, so I started a kite business. I've been selling these for almost a year now," said Eko.

Located on Jalan Ganet, he sells a variety of kites in various motifs and sizes, including eagles, birds, fighter planes, and even ghosts.

"The largest ones are 1.5 to 3 meters long. I make them myself, and to fill the gap, I sell them on Saturdays and Sundays," said Eko.

Prices vary, from Rp 6,000 for small kites to Rp 15,000 to Rp 20,000. "Large kites are around Rp 65,000 to Rp 100,000, depending on demand," he said.

Eko mentioned that making kites involves some challenges with the raw material, namely bamboo. He explained that the bamboo used in Tanjungpinang is quite different from that found on Java.

"Making these kites is a bit difficult because Tanjungpinang bamboo is different from Javanese bamboo. We have to bend them carefully to make the kites," he said.

He can't say for sure how many he sells per day when selling kites. However, he has sold up to 10 kites in one day.
