Learn about the benefits of herbal medicine for chickens

Jamu is known as a herbal remedy consumed to maintain stamina and treat various human ailments. However, not many people know that jamu also has benefits for animals, including chickens.

This was demonstrated during a visit by RRI to a waste recycling company, the Kertabumi Recycling Center, on Friday (May 31, 2024). There, they raise chickens fed with food scraps mixed with jamu or herbs.

"The chickens are plump and healthy because we mix their food with herbs like turmeric," said Santi, one of Kertabumi's co-founders. Some of the medicinal plants used in the feed include ginger, galangal, turmeric, betel leaves, and Javanese ginger.

1.Improves metabolism

Jamu feed contains natural antibiotics that can improve metabolism and immunity, as well as increase appetite in chickens.

2.As medicine

Jamu feed can prevent and treat various diseases in chickens, such as Pullorum (lime), snot (chicken flu), and Tetelo/ND (feral snot).

3.Improves meat quality

The use of herbal feed can also improve meat (carcass) quality, reduce the fishy odor in the carcass, and make egg yolks more orange.
