WHAT CAUSES DISTRACTION?
Distractions are caused by:
- Internal sources: These are hunger, fatigue, anxiety, boredom, and overwhelming thoughts.
- External sources: These include noise, digital notifications, cluttered environments, and other people.
The fundamental cause of distraction in a classroom, especially in a secondary school setting, is often an inability to pay attention due to factors like:
** A lack of interest in the current task.
** The intensity or novelty of a distractor.
** The brain struggles with multitasking.
As a teacher, I have noticed that a lot of students ranging from the junior category to the senior category are often distracted as a result of the above mentioned; therefore, a possible remedy or action should be taken to curb distractions amongst young people.
Distraction is a significant factor in learning because it impairs attention, memory, and comprehension by diverting cognitive resources, leading to longer task completion times, reduced learning quality, and decreased academic performance. Both internal and external factors contribute to these difficulties by dividing attention and increasing cognitive load.
HOW TO CURB DISTRACTION AS A STUDENT IN THE CLASSROOM:
To curb classroom distraction;
- Position yourself near the teacher to stay engaged.
- Take active notes.
- Politely ask distracting peers to be quiet.
Ways, teachers can help students avoid being distracted in the classroom:
To help students avoid distractions;
- Teachers should create an organised and clutter-free learning environment.
- Carefully plan lessons to be engaging and interactive.
- Strategically arrange seating to minimise disruptions.
- Set clear expectations and rules for behaviour.
- Teach and model attention-management strategies.
- Incorporate regular breaks and opportunities for movement.
With the above points, if applied to students in the classroom, distractions will be minimised while learning, and students will study hard and learn more than they used to.
It will give them a better future and name.
So as a student, refrain from distracting others or being distracted in the classroom.
As a teacher, do everything possible to assist them in focusing while learning.
