Hello, friends welcome to my post in which I have discussed "Protected animals in my country" as part of my participation in this 👉contest.

Here, I have shared an overview of some of the protected animals in Nigeria; as we usually read before this time around, it is a different animal that is shared with their threats, population status, legal protection, and the regional significance of these protected animals.


Nigerian Flapshell Turtle 🐢

This is a protected animal in Nigeria with the following:

  • Protection status: It is critically endangered and the animal is very rare in Nigeria and possibly extinct in some parts of Nigeria.

Habitat and Environmental Threats:

  • It is a typical animal because it is native to the slow wetlands and moving rivers of Nigeria.

  • Legal protection: This animal is protected under the Nigeria Endangered Species Act.


West African Lion

This is also a protected animal in Nigeria with the following:

  • Population Status: There are less than 400 left in West Africa; a small population size of this animal is found in Nigeria in places like the Kainji Lake National Park and Yankari Game Reserve.

Habitat and Environmental Threats:

  • Human-Wildlife Conflict: This animal suffers from retaliatory killing because of livestock loss.

  • It is a typical animal that symbolizes strength in Nigerian folklore and culture, featured in national ceremonies and local traditions in Nigeria.

  • The Legal protection: Bauchi and Niger States wildlife protection laws, endangered species act, and it is also protected under CITES Appendix II.

This is a protected animal in Nigeria with the following:

  • Population Status: It is reducing due to capture for the pet trade.

Habitat and Environmental Threats:

  • Habitat loss and illegal pet trade

  • It is a typical animal because it was once common in Nigeria forest based on its mimicry and intelligence.

  • **Legal protection:"" Endangered Species Act (Amended 2016) and CITES Appendix.
