SLC27-W2 | Determining Content Direction & Simple Tools for YouTube
Welcome to the Second Week of the Learn to Be a YouTuber Program! Last week, we started with lessons on creating a YouTube channel and understanding the basics. That was just the foundation. In this second week meeting, we'll take it up a notch by discussing two very important things that will greatly determine the future of your channel. The first is determining the direction of your content or niche, so that your viewers and subscribers know what you specialize in. The second is preparing simple equipment that is sufficient to start producing videos, without having to spend a lot of money.
You need to know the two things above, which will enable you to start shaping your channel's identity, attract the right audience, and produce your first video in a more polished and focused manner. So, let's discuss this further while putting it into practice.
1. The Importance of Defining Your Niche
It is important to note and always remember that YouTube is a vast platform, hosting millions of videos on various topics ranging from gaming, tutorials, reviews, daily vlogs, to educational content. Therefore, if you want to create random videos without direction, your channel will look messy, and YouTube's algorithm will be confused, making it difficult for your channel to grow.
That is why it is crucial to choose a niche, or what is commonly known as the main focus of your channel. By selecting a clear niche, viewers will find it easier to recognize your channel's unique characteristics and understand that “this person is a specialist in this field.”
You don't have to be too rigid or formal, but you can experiment with other types of content, as long as you stay consistent with your main focus. Another factor that helps your channel grow quickly is consistency—this is what makes your channel look professional, have a unique identity, and be easier for people to remember.
Examples of Popular Niches on YouTube
1. | Creative 🎨 |
---|---|
* | This creative content includes animation, music, graphic design, song covers, short films, or other art forms. |
* | This content is perfect for anyone with artistic skills or high creativity. |
* | The challenge with choosing this content is that it usually takes longer to produce. |
2. | Gaming 🎮 |
---|---|
* | Gaming content can include gameplay, new game reviews, tips & tricks, or even live streaming while playing your favorite games. |
* | This type of content is perfect for anyone who enjoys gaming and has knowledge about the gaming world. |
* | The challenge with this type of content is the fierce competition, so you need to be creative to stand out from other channels. |
3. | Vlog 📹 |
---|---|
* | This content certainly includes stories about daily life, campus/work activities, traveling, or unique experiences. |
* | Vlog content is very suitable for anyone who is confident in front of the camera and likes to share personal stories. |
* | All types of content have challenges, and the challenge for this content is that you have to be clever in making ordinary life more interesting and relatable to the audience. |
4. | Education 📖 |
---|---|
* | Educational content ranges from tutorials, exam tips, quick learning methods, foreign languages, technology, or specific expertise. |
* | This type of content is ideal if you have the ability to teach or explain things in a simple manner. |
* | The advantage of this content is that viewers tend to be loyal because they are looking for solutions to their problems. The challenge is that you must have a thorough understanding of the material and so on. |
5. | Review 🛒 |
---|---|
* | Review content is, of course, reviews of products, technology, food, and tourist attractions. |
* | This type of content is suitable for anyone who likes to try new things and can give honest opinions. |
* | The advantage of this type of content is that it is often sought after by viewers before buying something. The challenge is that it requires more capital. |
After learning about the above content, ask yourself: What are my hobbies or passions? What skills do I have? What problems can I help solve for my audience?
2. Simple Equipment for Beginners
We often see that many people give up before they even start (giving up before the fight), because they think they need a lot of money, studio lighting, sophisticated cameras, and super-advanced laptops. However, none of that is necessary because beginners only need simple equipment that works well and maximizes what they already have.
1. | Smartphone |
---|---|
* | We can all see that cell phone cameras are now quite sufficient, with some even capable of recording in 4K to 8K. |
* | We only need to record videos with a minimum resolution of 1080p (Full HD) to ensure the video is clear. |
* | The tip is to choose a well-lit place when recording, either outdoors or near a window during the day, so that the results are better even without additional lighting. |
2. | Simple Tripod |
---|---|
* | The main function of using a tripod is to keep the video stable and prevent shaking. |
* | You can use a small tripod (mini tripod) or even make a simple support from books. Or look for a cell phone tripod at an online store. |
* | If you want to save money, ask your friends to help you record your video. |
3. | Cheap Clip-on Microphone |
---|---|
* | Please note that, in addition to video, sound is also key. Viewers feel comfortable hearing clear sound even if the image is mediocre. |
* | Therefore, a clip-on microphone can be plugged directly into a cell phone. It is affordable. |
* | Alternatively, you can record sound using a cell phone headset, then edit it to make it clearer. |
4. | Free Editing Application |
---|---|
* | CapCut → A simple video editing app with many effects, suitable for beginners. Available on mobile phones and computers. |
* | VN → A lightweight video editing app with no watermark, suitable for quick edits. |
* | FilmoraGo → A video editing app with fairly complete features. Available on mobile phones and computers. |
* | Or many other apps that can be used directly on your mobile phone or laptop to edit your videos. |
Additional Tips |
---|
* You need to start with what you have. The point is, don't wait until you have good equipment before you start. |
* Try to focus on content that you like, create it in your own style and be consistent, not the equipment. |
* If at some point in the future you have developed, then slowly upgrade your equipment. |
3. The Importance of Simple Scripts
We all know that many beginners make videos to upload to YouTube and social media without careful preparation, resulting in videos that are long-winded, unfocused, and even boring for viewers. That's why a simple script is so important.
1. Reasons why scripts are needed |
---|
* By creating a script, you will be more focused so that you know what to discuss from start to finish, in a structured manner. |
* With a script, you will also save time on editing, as the recording will be neat and there won't be many cuts. |
* In the script, you have already determined the message that will make the audience understand the essence of your video. |
* Make yourself more confident during recording because you won't be confused or nervous in front of the camera. |
2 | Simple Script Structure |
---|---|
a. | Opening |
* | Many YouTubers start their videos with a brief greeting and an introduction of themselves or their channel. |
* | Create videos that are as cool as possible with the goal of grabbing viewers' attention in the first 5–10 seconds. |
* | A simple opening example: “Hello, friends, welcome to the Walictd channel! This time we'll discuss how to quickly become a YouTuber and become famous.”* |
b. | Clear content/main topic. |
* | We really need to discuss the main points in a logical and clear manner, so that the audience is not confused. |
* | Use simple language, as if you were chatting directly with your loyal audience. |
* | If necessary, you must write the main points (bullet points) in your video discussion rather than long sentences. |
c. | Closing |
* | You need to summarize the key points so that your audience remembers what you discussed. |
* | You need to add a lighthearted call to action to support your channel, such as: like, comment, subscribe, or share. |
* | Here's a simple example: “Those are some simple tips to help you become a famous YouTuber easily. If you like the video, don't forget to click like and subscribe!”* |
Week 2 Assignment
In this second week of practice, complete the following 3 tasks:
1. | Competitor Content Research |
---|---|
* | You need to find two other YouTube channels that have the same niche as yours. |
* | You only need to note at least 3 interesting things from the video, such as the title, the way of speaking, editing, thumbnails, and so on. |
* | You need to explain what you can imitate or develop for your channel. |
2. | Try writing 3 video title ideas for your channel + a short description. |
* | You need to provide a clear and interesting title. |
* | Include a description of at least 2 sentences to briefly explain the content of the video. |
3. | Choose one of the titles above and try to create a more detailed script for a video duration of at least 2 minutes. |
* | When writing a script, you don't just provide bullet points, but also an opening sentence, content, and closing sentence. |
* | You need to add notes, such as the expressions, intonation, or style of language you want to use. |
