Ghanaian Folktale Series: The story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa the Queen Mother of Ejisu (18/12/2020)
I am sharing this story as i heard on my expedition to the Kumasi Military Museum than others may learn of the beautiful stories behind the Ashanti Empire. Image was taken during this expedition
It all began in the year 1820 when the explorers and troop of the United Kingdom made their way to the shores of Ghana which was as then known as Gold Coast, the name given as a result of the gold rich land they foreigners came to meet. It was even rumored that one could pick up gold just by walking the shores of our land. In that year the King of the Ashanti Empire at the time which was a sovereign state on its own within the Gold Coast Geographical location was Nana Osei Tutu Kwame Assibey Bonsu.
During the exploration by these foreigners they were captured by the Ashanti's and held prisoners for intruding on the land and preaching foreign ministry, this spark some conflict between the greatest empire at that time which was the ashanti empire and the UK forces and so even when the Ashanti freed the missionaries they still went ahead to attack and bring down the huts and buildings of locals causing the king and his people to elope for their lives.
This conflict went on for a while back and forth as the years went by until the King of the Ashantis, Nana Prempeh was captured in the year 1897 for not paying a fine of 5000 ounces of gold which was supposedly a debt left by the predecessor. The rest of the kings could not fight back and things remained in shells and tongue were tied until Sir Frederic Hudson of the UK forces at that time came to claim the Golden stool of the land, asking that it be given to him for his seating, meanwhile this stool was believe to contain the soul of the Ashanti Kingdom as it was commanded from the heavens by Okomfo Anokye to empower the Kingdom.
And so the Ashanti refused and although were scared one great woman stood up and her name was Nana Yaa Asantewaa, he lead a troop of men on a battle against the foreign troops who sought to take the stool of their lands and they continued to fight till their last breadth. And while they won many battles they eventually lost the war which was the beginning of Ghana's colonialism, irrespective Nana Yaa Asantewaa is well remembered for her bravery and for standing up for the empire when no man had the courage to do so. And so that's why we celebrate her and this is one of the great stories of the Ashanti Kingdom.
This is to empower not only our women but our men that when everything seems to have reached a point there will always be a way out if we stand up and push against all odds. Thanks for reading and have a nice time, greeting to all steemians and kudos to our leaders @mcsamm, @njaywan and @oppongk for their altruistic service.
