Hello friends, greetings to everyone. I hope you are all well, by the grace of God I am well. I am very excited because I can regularly add all the traditional places I know to steem-atlas location. I am enjoying this steem-atlas project very much. There are many historical traditional places around us that we can add to this atlas location if we wish. Each place has different cultural and traditional things. So I will present the content of this place that I have shown to you. Many thanks to @mohammadfaisal for organizing such a wonderful competition among us. I am always with the steem-atlas project.

Nagarpur Zamindar Bari is a historical building located in Nagarpur Upazila of Tangail District, Bangladesh. This Zamindar Bari was originally built during the British period and has played an important role in the social, cultural and political history of the region. The various structures of Nagarpur Zamindar Bari include the Jhulan Dalan.

The Jhulan Dalan is considered one of the attractions and symbols of the Nagarpur Zamindar House. It is not just a piece of architecture, it was the heart of the Zamindar tradition, religious ceremonies and cultural consciousness of the time. Although there is no ticket or fee to visit this place, the government has made it completely free.

Architectural features

The word Jhulan comes from the Hindu religious festival Jhulan Yatra. I learned from various sources that during this festival, idols of Lord Krishna and Radha are placed on swings and swung, creating a festive atmosphere. It is likely that this structure was named Jhulan Dalan to celebrate this festival.

The Jhulan Dalan is a two-storeyed quadrangular building with an open verandah roof. The ground floor is partly open and has arched passages in some places to allow air to circulate. The upper floor has a wide platform from which a distant view of the natural landscape can be seen. It was also used as a platform for worship.

  • Terracotta designs on the edges of the roof, columns, arches and stained glass work in some places are visible. The architectural style clearly shows Indo-European influences and in some parts Mughal influence. I stopped at each place and took pictures.
Use and Function

On the occasion of Jhulon Yatra, the Krishna-Radha dolna was installed here and a festive atmosphere prevailed throughout the house. During the puja, there were musical performances, dances and illuminations which created a stir in the area. The women of the landlord family enjoyed the ceremony from the upper verandah as it was directly accessible from the inner palace. It was sometimes used for trials or public hearings.

Today, this hanging building is in a dilapidated state. The brick and cement are falling off, some parts of the roof have broken, and the terracotta artwork has faded. Yet its structure and beauty are so impressive that it still has a kind of hypnotic effect on the minds of tourists. I tried to go inside that room, but the government has locked it up, as you can see in the picture below.

Architectural view of the back of the Jhulan building

The back of the Jhulan building had an open veranda and high arches. This ensured air circulation during worship and on the other hand, the building could maintain a cool environment. This side was a suitable place to sit during the rainy season or summer. The walls were decorated with terracotta and plastered foliage, flowers and geometric designs. Although many places have now been destroyed, if you open your eyes, you can understand how meticulously these were made. Standing here, we took many pictures.

  • There was usually a staircase or ramp leading down from the back of the hanging building, which connected it to the inner courtyard or other parts of the house. It was built at a lower level than the main building so that water could flow away if it accumulated. However, we were unable to go to that area because it was closed.

At the back of the building were several high arches which helped in the circulation of air on one side. On the other hand, they prevented the heat of the sun to some extent. The arches had small decorations which bore the influence of ancient Muslim architecture. On the walls of this part, I saw plastered designs of vines and flowers. Although much of it has faded due to time, the impression of that art is still clear in some parts. These designs are usually handmade and each design was unique.

I realized that this view behind the Jhulan Dalan is not only a symbol of architecture but also an example of the secret lifestyle of the zamindar family, their religious rituals and their love for nature. It is being lost to time, but it is our responsibility to preserve this history.

What time is best to go?

Early morning or between 7 am and 9 am. This time is calm, serene, and cool. If there is a pond or garden behind the building, the light mist, birdsong, and soft sunlight all combine to create a wonderful atmosphere. This time is also perfect in terms of light if you want to take pictures.

Between 4 pm and 5:30 pm. At this time, the sun leans towards the west and creates a natural art of shadow and light mixing on the back of the building. Especially if you sit on the roof or on the open veranda at the back, the breeze and light combine to bring a kind of softness. The softness of the afternoon is much more noticeable with the birds singing. Although we went at noon, so it was very sunny, the pictures were captured well.

The Jhulan Dalan, part of the Nagarpur Zamindarbari, is a structure from the past that stands tall as a witness to time. People's interest in this structure is long-standing and multi-layered. First, its historical importance arouses people's curiosity. This building, which is associated with the zamindar culture of the British era, was the center of many religious and social festivals. Especially, the rituals that were held here on the occasion of the Jhulan Yatra are still legendary among the people.

Secondly, its architectural style is very charming. The combination of Indo-European construction style, arches, decorations and open roof gives the building a tasteful beauty. Especially the open veranda at the back, the view of the garden and the opportunity to see nature from the roof impress the visitors. We went there and tried to take pictures from every angle and present them to you. It is located in a peaceful environment where natural beauty and silent history combine to create an emotional feeling. Below I have shown some locations including the steem-atlas location.
