Contest Alert: Old age and the joy it brings

in Steem For Lifestyle2 days ago (edited)

Personally, I want to say that I’m super-excited and so glad I grew up with my grandmother as one of my solid rocks. Growing up with her has taught me pretty much about what it means to live an experienced and fulfilled life.

Hello everyone. Trust we’re doing just great today. This particular contest found its way to my heart with so much ease and joy. Truly, old age comes with joy, peace and satisfaction when you’re worthy of the experiences you’ve had so far.

Just so I set the tone very clear, not every old age comes with wisdom and discernment. Some are just old because they have lives in their body. It doesn’t mean they’ve lived the best life.

Do you belong to the group of people that don’t want to grow old?

Never! I have never sat for a day to forbid the fact that I’d grow old someday. It’s just so funny how people are so scared of transiting into a new and refreshing phase of their life.

Growing up with my grandmother has done more than having a history;it’s actually a story I am proud of sharing with anyone who cares to listen about how sweet it is.

My grandmother would tell me stories of what happened while when was growing and maturing. Most of these stories seem as though they are fictional. But, they’re not.

As a storyteller, I want to grow old so I can have even more stories to share with the younger generation. Though I have stories to be told now, which is what I am still doing little by little, having some white hair on the head adds some aesthetics to it. there’s more to it though—wisdom.

What are the characteristics of old age?

The characteristics here varies at every phase of one’s advanced life.

  • Sensory impairment: Older adults are not quick to sense with stuff, or have issues in seeing properly, hearing or even tasting something. This part is where we have most of the elderly people asking who just greeted them when someone they can’t see very well greets them. The person has to come very close for them to recognise who the person really is.

  • Reduced physical abilities: Many aged adults do less of any physical work because of their strength. These are also people who need much care as they are fragile, and need to be understood for a better living. Their muscles become weak, and they need a lot of support to go around a number of physical activities to keep them a bit strong and active.

  • Change in hair colour: This is my favourite part. This is when the hair begins to change from black or brown to a golden colour—gray or white. This is one of the first signs that gives an elderly person away. From thee time most people begin to see strands of white hair coming out, they already know life is taking them to a different stage.

  • Memory decline: Most elderly people tend to forget things quickly. I had this feeling when I had to remind my grandmother of my birthday almost every year. I still do that though. People must be around to remind them of what plans they had for the day just so they do not miss out.

Even younger persons forget, how much more the elderly ones? My grandmother would always say to us in the house, “please remind me of this on this day in case I forget.” She knows her memory isn’t capable of keeping most things, and she takes control over it by getting the family involved. One of the reasons I love her dearly.

  • Wisdom: When I started this blog, I had mentioned earlier that being old doesn’t make one wise automatically. But the ones who grow up turning experiences and failures into their learning process, doubled with heir experiences make the most wise and discerning elderly person.

These people have seen and heard and experienced a lot to be in the right position to advice the younger ones confidently.

What are you doing to stay healthy during old age?

From what I see people around me do, I would:

  • Drink a bottle of water every morning: This is for everyone though. It helps to flush and keep the system clean and refreshed.

  • Exercise every morning: While my grandmother takes the initiative to do some simple house chores, other elderly people I see could take a walk that’d last for minutes, if not an hour.

  • Eat healthy: This is the age where most of the fired foods should be cut down. Snacks can be replaced with veggies and fruits. It’s very important to their body and system.
At what age can we call someone an old person?

From the age 60. At 60, I guess a person must’ve began to grow some gray air. Their bones could be a bit weak, and wrinkles encroaching gradually. At this point, this is purely an old folk. Some of them may not really feel they are old, but this is where one should be very careful with their physical activities and eating habits.

This is where I would draw the curtains by saying that old age is just a golden age. There should be no fear in it. It should be embraced with so much joy. And this can only be done when we work hard and responsibly while we’re still young.

Would like to invite @josepha, @saintkelvin17, and @beevicsam to participate in this contest.
