Hello Steemians,

This evening, I decided to take a small tour of the Medina of Tunis, a place that always surprises me with its living traditions and timeless charm. Walking through its narrow alleys feels like stepping back in time every corner hides a story.

Women in Safsari

As I walked, I came across a group of women wearing the Safsari, the traditional white veil of Tunis. It is rare to see it nowadays, but every time I do, it reminds me of the elegance and modesty of our cultural heritage. It felt like a scene from the past still alive in today’s Medina.

Old Men and Their Game

In another alley, I noticed two old men playing checkers on a simple wooden board placed over an old beton pot. Their pieces were nothing fancy, just bottle caps in two colors but the game was full of life. This game has always been a favorite pastime for elders in Tunisia. Their faces were full of focus and joy, showing how simple traditions keep people connected.

Rooftop View of the Medina

Later, I climbed to the roof of an old shop to get a better view. From there, the Medina opened up in front of me: the Zitouna Mosque standing proudly in the center, its minaret rising into the sky. I even had the chance to see the muezzin, preparing to call for prayer. The moment was peaceful and spiritual, a reminder of the Medina’s deep soul.

Pause at Slimania Café

During my walk, I stopped for a break at the traditional Slimania Café, one of the oldest in the Medina. The atmosphere was calm and authentic, with wooden chairs, tiled walls.

I ordered a green tea, served in a small glass, and enjoyed it with Makroudh and Youyou two of our most famous Tunisian sweets. Later, I couldn’t resist adding a fresh fruit tart to complete the pause.

The moment was made warmer by Fathia, the café’s owner, who welcomed me with kindness, and Houssem, the friendly server, who made sure everything was perfect. Slimania is more than a café it’s a place where tradition, taste, and hospitality come together.

Flowers of Bougainvillea

Before leaving, I took a photo with a bougainvillea flower behind me. These bright flowers, climbing on the walls and doors, can be found in every corner of the Medina, giving it color and life.

Closing

My evening in the Medina was short, but full of discoveries. Between traditions, games, architecture, and flowers, the Medina is not just a place it is a living memory of Tunisia. I left with photos, smiles, and a deeper appreciation for the treasures that surround us every day.

Thank you for joining me on this walk.
