🏵️THE DIARY GAME 🏵️

The day was the one following Pahela Baishakh. Every year, a Baishakhi fair is held here on Pahela Baishakh. Ever since I was a child, every time the fair was organized, I went to visit it. The atmosphere of the fair is always wonderful. This year too, I set out from home in the evening to go to the fair.

After leaving home, I stood on the bridge by the riverbank. One of my friends was supposed to meet me there. We had planned that the two of us would roam around the fair from evening until ten at night. Since his house was a bit far away, it was taking him some time to arrive. So, I stood on the bridge, enjoying the cool breeze. The soft Baishakh winds seemed to fill my heart and soul with joy. After waiting for a while, he finally arrived. Then, the two of us headed toward the fair.

When we entered the fair through the gate of Kotchandpur Pilot School, we saw that there was a huge crowd of people. Everyone had come rushing to witness the beauty of the fair. Because this fair is organized every year, it is quite renowned and well-known throughout the country. People from nearby areas also come rushing to this fair. And every year, such a crowd can be seen — it was nothing new this time either. Everyone had brought along their little children, and parents were busy buying toys and treats for them according to their wishes.

There were many food stalls set up at the fair. Especially since it was the hot season, the sherbet stalls were very crowded. In addition to regular water sherbet, there was also sugarcane juice being sold. There were also various stalls selling spicy puffed rice (jhal muri) and phuchka (pani puri). The phuchka stalls, in particular, had a lot of girls crowding around. After all, who comes to the fair and doesn't eat anything? That never happens.

Then I saw that various types of toys were being sold at the fair. Seeing these items immediately reminded me of my childhood memories. So many memories are tied to these things by the grace of Allah. Back then, due to a lack of money, I couldn’t buy many toys. Whenever a fair came to town, I would beg my parents for toys. They would buy me some, but not all that I wanted. Even then, my heart would remain a little sad.

Today, I notice that although we now have money, the childhood desire to play with toys is no longer there. Now, seeing these toys doesn't make me want to play with them. Instead, they bring back old memories and a longing in my heart — wishing that those childhood days could return once more.

After that, I kept walking and visited a few shops. I had no intention of buying anything; I had just come to see the fair. While exploring, I also took some pictures. Because of the lights at night, the fair looked beautifully decorated. Some stalls had used different kinds of lighting to attract visitors.

Then, I noticed a vendor standing with sticks of cotton candy. The cotton candy would melt in your mouth almost instantly, yet tasted wonderfully sweet. Cotton candy has been one of my favorites since childhood. So when I saw it here today, I bought some. My friend and I started eating it together. It still tastes just as good as before.

Then, nearby, I noticed an elderly man selling wooden rolling pins used for making bread. These items are mainly used for preparing flatbreads. At fairs like these, the women of the household are often particularly drawn to such items. Many were buying these products from him.

Right next to it, I saw handwoven items like kula (winnowing trays) and peita (hand fans) made from bamboo strips. These products help preserve our traditional cottage industries. They sell in large quantities at fairs, and compared to regular days, they are available here at much cheaper prices. As a result, buyers show a lot of interest in purchasing them from the fair. Some even stock up enough to last them until the next year’s fair.

After that, my eyes caught sight of a clay goods stall. This shop sold various pottery items, all handcrafted by local potters. There were clay pots, pans, utensils, and even clay stoves. Nearby, I also spotted clay piggy banks for sale.

In childhood, we used to buy such banks and save our coins in them. Only those who have done this as children can understand the simple joy of saving money that way. When we would finally break open the clay bank, it would reveal a surprising amount of money — a reward for our patience — filling us with immense happiness.

Then, I came across several cosmetics stalls. Young girls had gathered there in large numbers, eagerly buying different kinds of items. The most popular purchases included bangles, bracelets, hair bands, and other everyday essentials. Some of the stalls were quite large, and a few even sold city gold jewelry, which especially attracted the younger crowd.

Wandering around like this, time slipped away. Eventually, it was around 10 p.m., and I decided to head back home. Today's fair brought back so many sweet memories of my childhood.

The only sadness lingering in my heart was the wish: if only I could relive those carefree childhood days once more.
