Cover Photo. Vintage Look of CHR shop in Saidpur Railway Workshop

I recently visited the Saidpur Railway Workshop, one of the largest and oldest railway industrial facilities in Bangladesh. I was drawn to this place because of its rich history and connection to the British colonial period. The workshop is home to vintage locomotives, historic machinery, and old railway architecture, which I find fascinating.

What makes this place truly special for me is the opportunity to observe the locomotive repair process up close which I witnessed here. While watching skilled workers restoring old engines and maintaining railway equipment gives me a unique insight into the behind-the-scenes operations of the railway workshops.

As someone like me who enjoys exploring vintage railway architecture and learning about the history of rail transport in Bangladesh, I find visiting places like this both educational and inspiring. It is like stepping back in time, when the British ruled and implemented railway fascilities, and witnessing the legacy of our railway heritage.

There is no fee to visit the CHR Shop in Saidpur Railway Workshop; however, if you have a friend who is a railway employee and he recommends you to the security, you will be granted permission to enter here. I had a familiar younger brother who works here, and I entered the workshop through his recommendation.

Railway post office closed to the CHR shop

The CHR shop located not so far from the main entrance. Before visiting the CHR shop, I took a look at this old building. Because it is only a few steps away from the CHR shop. This post office still receives important railway documents which is interesting. After looking at the post office, I headed to the CHR shop with my younger brother. I noticed some instructions on the signboards that gave me an idea of how disciplined an employee should be here, and I was also impressed by the safety concerns that were included in the instruction board. Below are some of the lovely instructions that are displayed on the signboard.

Instructions 1

Work carefully and avoid danger.

The best work is the work that overcomes instinct. -Hazrat Ali (RA)

A close look to the various machines and components inside the shop

The first line of the instructions was used to alert the employees to work safely in order to prevent danger, which also gives me the impression that there may be some dangerous railway operations here. I noticed numerous machines, equipment, and railroad coaches when I first walked into the store. When I saw the various machines, I felt scared because they were so large and had complicated structures. I attempted to photograph from a safe distance, despite the fact that some of the machines at the CHR shop were not operational.

Numerous crucial pieces of railroad train equipment are spread out across the shop floor

One of the important places in the workshop is the CHR shop. This is where the coaches of passenger trains are repaired. Some important parts like the wheels and trolleys are also installed or fixed here. I realized that many of the trains we ride without thinking may have been repaired here by skilled workers. Their efforts give us hope that passengers can travel safely and comfortably to their homes.

I saw some massive cranes that could effortlessly move heavy train components inside the shop. The CHR shop houses many old machines that existed before Bangladesh's independence. Although these machines have been abandoned, they are part of our railway heritage. The appearance of these unused machines gives us an idea of how old railway machines looked before. When I searched with the keyword with "Steam Traverser TR-2" on google there was no information about it. This machine installed here 1907 in british period and it was a crane. If I had not known the information from the employee here, I would not have found it on Google.

Steam Traverser TR-2. Capacity: 25 tons , Installation Year: 1907. This is more than 100 years old and not operational now. It was once used to easily transfer coaches from one line to another. It's a trial crane

I liked how these railway machines remained in place despite the fact that they were no longer operational. I belive this place isn’t just about repairing trains, It also tells me the story of our railway heritage. The architecture of some buildings inside the workshop still carries the look and feel of British time. It was a dream come true for someone like me who enjoys vintage railway structures.

The saw mill shop located next to the CHR shop

When I exited the CHR shop via the back exit, I was surprised to see the old structure. Because this artchitecture is similar to the british style. It is not unusual to see this style here, as the Saidpur Workshop was founded in 1870. When I saw the vintage look of the CHR shop, I became even more excited. It had the appearance of a ruined mansion. I noticed some other offices next to the CHR shop. But I did not have enough time to explore everything. I also saw a railway museum there. But the museum was closed.

There is a museum near the CHR shop, which was closed that day

Overall, my visit to the railway workshop was enjoyable and memorable. It was a great walk through our railway history and witnessing the iconic machines and buildings. I hope to return to this workshop to learn more about the history and share it with you.

I am inviting @pea07, @ae-arfin & @miftahulrizky to take part in the contest.
