Today I am here with a different post. I came to my village on vacation and here I saw the method of collecting peanuts for the first time. Peanuts are cultivated in a specific place in my village because peanuts grow only in sandy soil. There is a river in my village and peanuts are cultivated in an empty space across the river. Peanuts are cultivated in a wide green field. People graze cows in this field but cows and goats do not destroy the peanut fields. In the above picture you can see a cow eating grass next to the nut field. I was surprised to see such a scene.

Cultivation period of Peanut

The period for peanut cultivation is before the rainy season, especially in March and April. Since these are planted in sandy soil, these are planted and harvested before the rainy season. The peanut field that I will share with you was planted in March. These are harvested within 90 to 120 days of planting. They are usually harvested when the leaves dry up or turn yellow. These peanuts were harvested in June.

  • When the leaves of the peanut plant start to dry, the plants are lifted from the ground. After lifting, the plants are stacked in a specific place. At this time, the nuts have a lot of sand on them. The nuts are left in a specific place for a while to dry. Pulling the peanut plants is a relatively difficult task. When I helped the farmer pull a few peanut plants, I realized that this is not an easy task. The farmer was getting quite tired of pulling a few plants while collecting the peanut plants.

  • In the second step, the previously harvested peanut plants are taken to a separate area nearby. The nuts are separated from the plant and placed on a net to dry in the sun so that the sand is separated from the nuts. Several people work together in this step. Some people work to transport the peanuts from the field to the processing plant. They are then left to dry on a net. There is no specific time for drying, but it takes less than 12 hours.

  • In the last step, the peanuts are separated from the excess sand, grass, and hollow nuts using natural air. It is a very satisfying sight. If you have not seen it, you must try to experience it. After thorough cleaning, they are bagged for marketing. One end of the bag is well sealed so that they do not wear out. This was the method of marketing raw peanuts. These peanuts are sold directly in the open market, oil mills/processing units, and wholesale markets.

Storage Method

Peanuts are stored by keeping them dry. For this, peanuts should be dried thoroughly. The peanuts should be dried in the hot sun for 3-4 days. Storing them in a dry and cool place can prevent rotting.
