Did you know that the unit for measuring the brightness of a light source is often measured in candela? The term candela is the Latin word for candle as it was originally associated with the brightness of a candle.

Today, I will be drawing a candle; it is typically a waxed wick that can hold a flame and brighten its surroundings. Once the wick is set on fire, the generated heat melts the wax and uses it as a fuel to keep the flame burning. The candle became my choice simply because it starts with the letter C as requested by the contest organiser.

What we need

To draw a candle, I collected the needed materials in place. Below are the items I used for the drawing.

The Procedure

Step 1 [Preparing the Canvas]

Here is my drawing paper, cut and ready, with my username and today's date. 7th April 2025.

Step 2

I started drawing the main body of the candle. An ellipse at the top and two vertical lines got the whole drawing started.

At this point, I had to bring in the candle's wick. It was bigger at the base and pointy at the tip. Sitting like a twig on the elliptical shape I drew earlier.

Step 3

I now added the candle's flame, burning around the tip of the candle wick.

The heat from the flame did melt down some candle wax, rolling down the side of the candle stick.

At this point, the candle was already looking good enough. Yet I needed to start switching to another phase, the shading phase.

Step 4[Shading]

It's time to add a little colour to the sketchwork.

The flame was the first to get its colour. A mix of orange and yellow, while some parts were white hot.

Then I coloured the candle stick, paying special attention to the dripping wax.

Finally, I shaded the darkness around the candle.

Step 6 [Finishing]
