How to Set Up a Sub metering System in Your House.
Assalamualaikum Everyone. I am @imranhassan
From #Bangladesh
In today's post, I will show you how to use a main meter and a sub-meter to separately connect different units (such as the main house and the rental house) in a house. I have drawn this diagram with my own hands so that everyone can understand it easily.
What is a sub meter? Why Use Sub Meters? |
---|
A sub-meter is a meter that works below the main meter. It measures the electricity used for a specific unit separately. It is easy to bill tenants separately; if someone uses more, it can be detected specifically and transparent accounting can be maintained
What is a circuit breaker? |
---|
A circuit breaker is an automatic electrical switch that automatically disconnects the power supply in the event of an overload or short circuit in the power line. It keeps our homes, offices, or any electrical system safe.
I am starting my tutorial post. Line connection from electricity pole |
---|
In this step, we can see that two wires come from the electricity pole—one live (shown in red) and one neutral (shown in black). These two wires are directly connected to the main energy meter.
Explanation:
Live wire is the main carrier of electricity flow Neutral wire completes the electricity flow Main meter receives electricity from these two lines and records the unit
Main Energy Meter and MCB Connection |
---|
At this stage we can see it in the main energy meter. This meter is used to record the main electricity consumption. Then the line from the meter goes to the MCB (miniature circuit breaker), which is used here and is a 60A circuit breaker. This MCB basically ensures the safety of the electricity system. Later from this MCB, the connection goes to the main house (landlord's house).
Parts used in this step:
Main Energy Meter
MCB 60A
Main House (Landlord)
At this stage the electricity connection enters the house through the main meter and ensures safety through MCB. After that, electricity is supplied to the main house.
Power Connection to Sub-meter and Tenant Room |
---|
At this stage, we can see that there are two connections from the main MCB — one to the main house and the other to the sub meter panel, which is designated for Rent Room-1.
A 2P-60A MCB is connected to the sub meter panel, and then a Sub Meter-1 is connected to it. This sub-meter is mainly used to calculate the electricity consumption specifically for the tenant room.
Two wires (line and neutral) from Sub Meter-1 go directly to Rent Room-1, where a tenant lives.
Parts used in this step:
MCB (2P-60A) – To ensure the safety of the sub-meter.
Sub Meter-1 – To calculate the electricity consumption of the rent room separately.
Rent Room-1 – Where electricity is supplied through the sub-meter.
Brief Explanation:
In this step, the homeowner has installed sub-meters under his main meter so that separate electricity consumption can be determined for the rented room. This is an effective method that helps in dividing the electricity bill accurately.
Distribution of electricity to two rented rooms through two sub-meters |
---|
In this step, we can see that two sub-meter panels have gone from the main MCB, and each sub-meter is connected to a separate rented room.
Just as the first sub-meter (Sub Meter-1) is connected to Rent Room-1, the second sub-meter (Sub Meter-2) has been newly connected, which is supplying electricity to Rent Room-2.
Connection details:
Section | Details |
---|---|
Power Source | Power comes from the Main MCB. |
Breakers Used | Two separate 2P-60A breakers |
Sub Meter-1 | Connected to Rent Room-1 |
Sub Meter-2 | Connected to Rent Room-2 |
Wiring | Line and neutral from each sub-meter go directly to the respective room. |
Advantage 1 | Each rented room's electricity consumption can be calculated separately |
Advantage 2 | Owner can either pay bills separately or keep detailed records |
Advantage 3 | Easy monitoring and control of individual usage with sub-meter system |
MCB (2P-60A) | 2 – Used to protect sub-meter panels |
Sub Meters | 2 – For Rent Room-1 and Rent Room-2 |
Rent Rooms | 2 – Rent Room-1 and Rent Room-2 |
Electricity Supply 1 | Landlord’s Main House – via Main Energy Meter |
Electricity Supply 2 | Rent Room-1 – via Sub Meter-1 |
Electricity Supply 3 | Rent Room-2 – via Sub Meter-2 |
