Textual and virtual lectures in Covid-19 Isolation |
Several universities in the world, including in Indonesia, began to replace face-to-face meetings in class with online lectures to anticipate the spread of Covid-19 on campus. This policy must be supported by all parties to break the chain of spread of Coronavirus that is still ravaging.
Online lectures can be done using several applications, both virtual and textual. Facilities that can be used are e-learning on each campus. However, in some countries and cities with weak internet networks, e-learning facilities cannot run optimally. This has become a complaint in a number of countries, including in several cities in Indonesia because the power of the internet network has not been evenly distributed.
To anticipate these obstacles, each university can use free facilities such as Google Classroom, Google.meet, Zoom, and Webex for virtual lectures. Whereas for lectures intellectually, you can use WhatsApp, Telegram, or email.
Given the insignificant effect on learning, it is best for online lectures that are intellectual in nature to only be conducted on 25 percent of the total lectures, while the other 75 percent must take place virtually through several facilities as above.
Online and virtual lectures can also be held for quizzes, midterm exams, and final semester exams. Lecturers can also carry out thesis guidance, thesis, final project, report, practicum, and design implemented virtually and textually.
However, in certain circumstances, the campus should be able to use the lecture room as usual according to the WHO Co-19 deployment prevention protocol. The need for practicum and laboratory space is also needed for the research activities of lecturers and students.
To verify whether lecturing activities take place according to standards, each campus needs to build an easy, inexpensive and strategic verification system. This system should be integrated with the online lecture activities system.
Regarding the implementation of midterm and final semester exams, the methodology can be adjusted in the form of independent assignments, projects, essays, and so on. This adjustment also applies to the schedule for midterm and end of semester exams.
In the current state of emergency, universities don’t forget with community service and research. They can contribute to communication, information and education to help prevent and deal with Covid-19.
Lecturers and students can also make Covid-19 prevention and handling materials and equipment, conduct social studies and public policies, develop prediction and mitigation algorithms, and assist in the provision of healthy food for health workers and the poor people.[]
