Recently, tensions between India and Pakistan have continued to escalate, and a large-scale air battle broke out yesterday. According to Reuters, the Pakistani side claimed to have successfully shot down several Indian fighter jets, including Rafale fighter jets purchased by India from France. Judging from the images of the wreckage taken by local people that leaked on social media, the fact that the Indian fighter jet was shot down is basically true.
The trigger of the current India-Pakistan conflict originated from the terrorist attack that occurred at a tourist attraction in the Indian-controlled Kashmir region last month. Terrorists infiltrated from the direction of Pakistan, causing more than 20 deaths. Subsequently, India carried out large-scale retaliatory actions against targets within Pakistan and even employed the "Storm Shadow" long-range cruise missile, which had performed outstandingly in the Russia-Ukraine war. However, the loss of this high-value imported fighter jet has exposed that India's military strength in this conflict is not as powerful as it appears on the surface.
Although this conflict has given India a moral advantage due to the terrorist attack incident, if we trace the root of the problem, the root of the Kashmir dispute still lies in the historical issues left over from the period of the partition of India and Pakistan. The Kashmir region, as a special existence, has a population structure dominated by Muslims and was also a British Indian colony before the end of World War II. As Muslims are in the majority in Pakistan and non-Muslim populations are dominant in India, the United Kingdom adopted a religious zoning scheme when withdrawing from India.
It is worth noting that the particularity of Kashmir lies in its historical evolution. Even during the British rule, the Indian subcontinent was always composed of numerous tribes and small monarchies, similar to the feudal system of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in China. Most of the lower-class people in this region tend to be incorporated into Pakistan, while a minority of the ruling class choose to merge with India. This structural contradiction has led to multiple wars between India and Pakistan. Currently, India actually controls about 60% of the Kashmir territory, while Pakistan controls about 30%.
From the perspective of the principle of national self-determination when colonies gained independence, it was precisely through this concept that India itself achieved independence. However, on the issue of Kashmir, its ruling elite has demonstrated a historical cycle of "the dragon slayer eventually turns into an evil dragon". Not only did they fail to continue the anti-colonial spirit, but they also inherited the ruling logic of the British colonial period and regarded India itself as the successor of the British Empire in South Asia. This contradictory mentality directly affected the regional situation.
Although India has, in recent years, relied on its adept international political stance to purchase a large amount of advanced equipment from countries such as Russia, the United States, and France, ostensibly forming an overwhelming advantage over Pakistan. However, the outcome of this air battle indicates that the Pakistan Air Force, mainly composed of Chinese-made fighter jets such as the J-10 and JF-17, has demonstrated outstanding actual combat performance, proving that systematic combat capabilities are more effective than relying solely on advanced equipment. Although India has a crushing advantage over Pakistan in terms of population, resources and economic aggregate, it remains questionable whether these advantages can be effectively translated into military capabilities.
From a historical perspective, the Indian subcontinent has been an arena for foreign rulers since ancient times. From the caste system established by the Aryans to the successive rule of the Greeks, Persians, Mongolians and even the British, except for the Maurya Dynasty established on its own, India has never formed a unified nation-state. This historical gene has led to the fact that its native ethnic group does not seem to be known for being martial. The subsequent development of this conflict still needs to be continuously observed.
