The Diary Game Season 3 [ Sunday June 08th, 2025 ] Age : My personal reflection
Greetings Steemit friends,
Age, what do we think about it? The years just come and go, and we’re told we are one year older. You start noticing changes in yourself, and you watch your elders grow weaker, with a higher number attached to their age. This thought came to my mind after watching Cristiano Ronaldo, still active on the football pitch at age 40.
In my country, Cameroon, we remember Roger Milla, who was the oldest player in the World Cup competition. I can not recall the exact year, but it was either the 1994 or 1998 World Cup. He was not even up to 40 and could not play a full 90-minute match.
I’m a big fan of football, and that is why I mentioned these two names. I believe there are others in different fields doing extremely well at an older age, too. These guys have gone through various stages of life. Now we talk about the likes of Lamine Yamal, who at just 17 has already achieved what Ronaldo did at 22. That is winning both league and international medals. So age comes in stages, and we must try to achieve something meaningful at each stage.
Sometimes our career paths change with age, which is common among the elderly. Even in football, many of Ronaldo’s former teammates are now coaches. As we age, our dreams also evolve. We start to adapt with age, which is something I have seen in my own family.
As age keeps changing, some opportunities begin to slip away. You can not expect an aging person to compete with the younger generation on equal footing. That is why Ronaldo’s involvement in the 2025 UEFA Nations League and winning the trophy is making headlines. Many had written him off, but he played over 80 minutes in the final at age 40. He made himself an exception to the rule, one we thought no longer applied to him.
For me, this is just another reason to never give up on your goals, no matter your age. If you did not succeed at 20, keep pushing through your 30s. If it does not work by then, learn from the journey. It might guide your success at 40 or even 50. Death should be the only thing stopping you from chasing your dreams. That is why staying healthy should be a top priority, eat well, get regular checkups, and be aware that your body changes as you age.
That’s just me sharing my thoughts on age. Now, let me share how my day went. It was Sunday, and as usual, I had to attend my Sunday morning sports. The field is far from my location, so I got up early and went straight to the office to wait for my colleagues. Once they arrived, we headed to the field together.
We started with our usual warm-up session, which was very intense this time around. I was extremely tired and almost did not want to play in the main game. But since our side was short of players, I had to stay on. I was happy to, since I missed the previous Sunday.
Playing two hours of football with elders is no joke. They are slower on defense and always rely on the younger ones to cover for them. After the game, they stayed back for the usual drinks session.
Soon after, I got a call from a friend based in Yaoundé. He had lost his mother and was in town to arrange the funeral. I did not get to see him the last time he visited, so I had to be there for him this time. We met, had a bottle of drinks, and he gave me more details about the funeral arrangements.
We parted ways, and I returned home to take my bath. He had to travel back and would return later for the final ceremony. After freshening up, I had dinner and got ready to watch the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain.
It was an interesting match. Even though I love Spain, I wanted Portugal to win this one. Spain were the defending champions, and I felt it would not be fair for them to win again as if other teams were not performing well. The game went to penalties, and of all people, Morata missed his shot. Spain had a good run, but winning again would not have felt right to me.
As expected, the media will continue comparing and praising Cristiano Ronaldo for winning another trophy for Portugal at age 40. I was already too tired to check what was going on on Steemit. That is how I found myself in bed.
Cheers
