The Diary Game Season 3 [ Friday May 16th, 2025 ] Undervaluing local developers and daily commitment
Greetings Steemit friends
When you put your head to work, you don't seem to see how time flies. I always feel a lot of pressure when a client has already paid and I'm holding onto the tasks I’m supposed to do. Coming back on a later day and presenting what I was supposed to deliver puts a lot of pressure on me.
Some people in my community still believe that the best talent is found in other countries. You’ll find most people prefer developers from abroad over those around them. They tend to forget the drawbacks of working with foreign developers. You have to deal with things like language barriers and time zone differences, which can be exhausting at some point.
Well, it’s their preference. But it just gets me upset when they’re unable to get the results they want and come back to us. Funny enough, foreign developers are usually more expensive. Most of the time, while looking for cheap labor, they end up giving their projects to amateur developers who fail to deliver the expected results.
This is exactly what happened with one of my clients, who came back to me a few days ago after giving their project to foreign developers. Today, I’ll be working on updating some of the things they requested.
I woke up late, thinking it was Saturday. But it was actually Friday. On Saturdays, the kids don’t go to school, so I’m usually not in a hurry to prepare. Then it struck me that it was Friday, and I had to hurry so the kids wouldn’t be late for school. I got ready on time and even had breakfast before going out.
I dropped the kids at school and headed straight to my office. My client sent me the updates they wanted for the web project. After going through the source code, I felt really bad. I’m quite sure the previous developer was a student and not a professional. I’ve had the chance to work with some foreign developers, and their work is not usually this messed up. Now I keep thinking, what was actually the reason for choosing this developer?
I went through the code and decided to make just the changes they requested, nothing more. Each feature has its unique style sheet, making it very challenging to debug. In case they ask for things I feel will take too much of my time, I’ll either reject them or quote a higher price.
As we moved forward with the changes, they were okay with the progress, but then started requesting things outside the original list. I made it clear that I would only proceed to host the site once the agreed payment was made.
By midday, our soccer academy had a training match. It’s been a while since I watched the kids play, so my colleagues and I went to the field. It was a great match. We were leading 2–0 when I left. We were playing against a local team, Nso United. I think they’re a second-division team.
I rushed to the kids' school since it was closing time. I picked them up, dropped them at home, and returned to the office. I continued working on my client’s web project to some extent, then decided to close for the day. I shared what I had done so far and told them I would continue the next day.
I got home and started preparing to watch the Friday night Premier League matches. Both teams competing for the Europa Cup had matches to play. Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur lost their matches.
I think they’re saving energy for the final on May 21, 2025. Both teams are not only playing for the cup but also a Champions League spot next season. That’s what’s at stake, and it's one of the reasons no football fan will want to miss the match.
It was late when I noticed everyone had gone to bed. So I retired to bed and ended my day.
Cheers
