Sleeping or having a rest during the day, what’s your take?

We often live like life is all about work, forgetting to create time for rest during the day. This is something many of us ignore, overworking ourselves without even realizing it. While we may feel like we are doing a great job, we might be creating harmful conditions for ourselves in the long run.

Yes, we sometimes go hours without eating just because we want to complete a task. At times, we silently overwork ourselves. That is checking emails in bed, cutting into what should be rest time. These are some of the habits that convince us rest is a weakness, when in reality, rest is one of the best ways to boost creativity and energy during the day.

If you observe well, athletes never joke with their rest time. It helps energize their bodies and minds. I remember some days when I just needed a 15-minute nap in the middle of a task to catch up with the day’s demands. Sleep is like recharging your phone, you need it to keep running at full capacity.

That said, you do not have to increase or reduce your night sleep just because you took a nap. Just like some people use caffeine to stay alert and continue working, others can take a 10–30-minute nap during the day and feel more effective without it ruining their nighttime sleep.
Of course, I won’t keep talking about how good it is to nap without mentioning some of the drawbacks.

Lack of rest during the day can lead to stress, fatigue, and a drop in productivity. You may be busy, but the results do not match the effort. You find yourself working all day, yet remaining in the same spot. Personally, I have found myself clicking endlessly from one webpage to another, doing “something” but achieving nothing. It feels like work, but there’s no result to show at the end of the day.

So I will always encourage you to find a way to balance short rest breaks with your work schedule. It is not about abandoning your job and heading home to sleep. Of course, that could get you fired! But you can apply a simple work–rest–work rhythm by taking short breaks during your work hours.

Create daily rest rituals for yourself. It could be:

  • Taking a walk around the office
  • Resting your head for a few minutes
  • Looking out the window
  • Or even taking a quick 10–30 minute nap

Let it become a habit, and you will see the difference in your energy, clarity, and productivity.
