Rena dulcis: The Blind Snake.
The Blind Snake.
The Rena dulcis, previously identified as Leptotyphlops dulcis, is a species of snake commonly found underground. Some local and common names for this snake include:
-Burrowing snake
-Eastern worm snake
-Texas worm snake
-Texas blind snake
It is said to be harmless to humans because they do not produce venom, nor are they poisonous. If you are getting confused by terms like venomous and poisonous, here is my attempt to differentiate this terms. But in both cases, you still end up dead. If it has to bite you to kill you, that is a venomous snake, but if you touched or bite it and it kills you, then, that is poisonous.
While the Rena dulcis is neither poisonous nor venomous, I personally avoid any creature that moves without legs. I rather be safe than sorry. And I believe that is a natural human reaction to snakes. If the picture is not enough to put you on edge, looking at it move below may invoke that feeling.
When I first saw it, I was making hips in the farm, I thought it was the young of a snake. The way it moved was a clear confirmation that I was not looking at a worm. The body had a peculiar scale pattern, shiny and smooth, emitting a brown-purplish hue that glitters in daylight.
It was pretty swift, about 12 inches long with a diameter of 2mm. Upon closer examination, I now noticed its forked tongue flicking out of a very small mouth. Snakes usually have a small mouth till you see them swallowing an egg that is larger than its head. This snake feeds on small worms, ants, ant laver, thermites and other small insects.
In this picture, you can see its small mouth and the dot it had for eyes. Of what use are eyes for a small snake that spends most of its time borrowing into soft soil. With the help of its Jacobson's organ, this almost blind snake detects chemical signals from its prey and can also feel the vibration around it.
Have you ever seen this snake? Will you trust it enough to let it go around your palm and dig between your fingers? @alexanderpeace, @ninapenda, and @josepha

Gracias.
