Transforming Lives Through Encouragement And Motivation
An old friend who is now an electrical engineer once shared with me how he started loving mathematics. He used to fail mathematics while in primary school and up until his junior secondary class 1. After their first term exam, his mathematics teacher called him and told him that he does not seen him as a failure, rather it is part of the learning processes. He told him that every mistake he has made in mathematics is a step towards understanding it, not a failure. This made him feel more encouraged to welcome maths and he began to put in the required effort. With the guidance of the teacher, he picked up, and by the class 3, he was already the best in mathematics in his set. This also explains why he chose a career in engineering. This goes to prove that with encouragement, lives can be transformed.
Encouragement is among the most powerful gifts that you can give to an individual. It may not cost you anything to motivate someone, but the effect that it will have on the person will be immeasurable. There is a kind of hope that is ignited in the heart of someone when you have encouraged them. No wonder it has been said that encouragement and motivation build confidence. You will be surprised how you can change the course of someone's life positively by your words of encouragement and motivation. This is not just about words, but it is about impacting hope.
The encouragement you give someone is like watering a plant in the dry season. When you have watered a plant, you will notice that it will begin to flourish and look fresh. There are people who have achieved greatness because someone gave them the motivation that they needed. There is nothing as sad as going through life unseen, discouraged, and undervalued. But a little motivation and encouragement can bring the person out of that sad state. Just some little words of encouragement that you give to someone can be what they will need to spark up their life, lift them up, and make them to keep going.
Just to let you know, lifting people does not necessarily mean giving a grand speech or some massive pieces of advice. Sometimes, something as little as "you are doing a good job," "I believe you can do it," "do not give up," "better days are coming," can be all that it will take to make a difference. These words may look small, but the power of affirmation that they carry is without question. This is because they create an atmosphere of positivity, and the person will begin to see possibilities, which also support growth. The small positive words you speak into someone can go a long way to transform their life.
Encouragement does not only transform an individual, it also transforms a community. For example; in your place of work, motivation from the leader can positively impact the entire workforce. At home, parents can motivate their kids to become better versions of themselves. Encouragement makes people feel part of a community that cares, and this can breed resilience, determination, joy, and even unity. I have observed that the people who are encouraged also pass on the same encouragement to others. By this, they are creating a ripple effect that will positively impact countless of lives.
There are lots of ways to motivate and encourage people. These include: recognising and celebrating even the little achievements in others, speaking positively, being present to help people, reminding people of their strengths, and by leading by example. You also have to understand that motivating and encouraging people does not transform the life of the recipient alone, but it also transforms your own life. It also helps to build good friendship and consolidate on relationships. This is the reason why you have to be intentional about how you relate with people; your actions and your words to them. The world is already full of negativities and struggles, but a kind word from you, and a right action you take towards someone can make a very big transformational influence in their life.
