The Power To Defy The Odds
There is something very powerful about taking a step and doing what has never been thought possible. When others say "it is impossible," the person with a possibility mindset will say "watch me how I do the impossible." Throughout history, we have seen people who rose from seemingly disadvantaged backgrounds, from poverty, from obscurity, from rejection, and even from disability to move the world. That someone has never done something does not mean it can never be done. Before a feat is done, or a trail is blazed, or a new path is found, it may be thought to be impossible until it is done. You are not to be limited by how things have been going, rather you are to defy the odds and do the impossible.

Some of the people who made impact in the world are not even from a rich background, or most educated, but they all had one thing in common - they stopped at nothing in the pursuit of their dreams. That is, they were determined to hit their target even when it may not look like it. When you put determination in what you do, then you are already a step forward than a lot of others. When others say "it cannot be done," you will tell them "watch as I do it."
I once read about a very great American educator and author of the 19th century, Helen Keller. At the tender age of less than 2years, she became blind and deaf, which also affected her speech. A lot of people thought that it was over for her and that she would not lead a successful life. However, she defied the odds and did the impossible. She had the opportunity to meet a visually impaired teacher, Anna Sullivan, who taught her enunciation, which enabled her to make statements. She also learnt how to feel vibrations with her hands while people speak. This marked a major milestone in her life. She defied all odds and became a global figure. She wrote several books, learnt multiple languages, travelled to many countries. She did what was thought impossible because she was determined to break limitations.
This also reminds me of Ben Underwood. At the age of 2, he was diagnosed of cancer in his eyes, and by the age of 3, both of his eyes were removed. People thought his dreams were cut short or that it was over for him, but they did not know that blind eyes does not mean blind mind. He learnt how to "see" with his ears through the means of echolocation. That is, he used sound to monitor and determine distance, shapes, location, and direction, the same way bats and dolphins do. He developed his echolocation abilities so extensively that he did things that even people with eyesight found difficult to do - he went for mountaineering unaided, went for hiking, etc. He defied the odds to do the impossible.
Barriers are not a signal for you to stop. In fact, they are not meant to inhibit your motion but to refine you and make you better. Anytime that life throws challenge on your path, you have 2 choices to make in response to it; you either quit or stand up and push harder. The first option may seem easy at the spot, but it will carry a lot of consequences later, including the pains of regrets. While the latter may be a difficult step to take, but it will open you up to the path of greatness. Greatness does not come by quitting at the sight of challenges but by standing up and facing it with boldness and determination.

There is nothing wrong in facing challenges in life, but you are not supposed to be defined by it, neither should you allow it to stop your advancement. The power to defy the odds lies in what you believe. If you believe that you can overcome, then nothing will hold you down. But if you believe that the challenge is bigger than you, then you may not overcome it. So you see, if you must defy the odds, then you must believe within you that you can. Great feat begins from the mind. It is how you have thought from your mind that will manifest in your actions.
