Personally, I'm one of those who finds it hard to accept the idea of humanoid robots swarming around my house, mainly because I live in a small apartment, and if I bump into my wife in the hallway now, I don't want to even think about having to dodge a metallic contraption, whose intentions I'm not entirely sure of. But I fear that, in the medium term, this will be inevitable, as several companies are determined to make this happen. Among them is the China-based company Unitree Robotics and its Unitree R1.

Personalmente soy de los que me cuesta aceptar la idea de ver robots humanoides pululando por mi casa, básicamente porque vivo en un pequeño apartamento y si ahora ya tropiezo con mi esposa por los pasillos, no quiero ni pensar tener que además esquivar un artilugio metálico, de cuyas intenciones no estoy muy seguro. Pero me temo que, a medio plazo, esto será inevitable ya que existen varias compañías empeñadas en que esto suceda. Entre ellas la compañía con sede en China Unitree Robotics y su Unitree R1.

The Unitree R1 is a humanoid robot developed by the Chinese company Unitree Robotics that has revolutionized the market, not for its exceptional performance but for its "affordable" price within the world of humanoid robots, selling for less than six thousand dollars. Until now, humanoid robots like Tesla's Optimus, Boston Dynamics' Atlas, or Ameca were inaccessible to most people due to their very high costs, but the R1 seeks precisely to democratize this technology.

El Unitree R1 es un robot humanoide desarrollado por la empresa china Unitree Robotics que ha revolucionado el mercado, no por sus prestaciones excepcionales sino por su precio “accesible” dentro del mundo de los robots humanoides ya que se vende por menos de seis mil dólares. Hasta ahora, los robots humanoides como Optimus de Tesla, Atlas de Boston Dynamics o Ameca eran inaccesibles para la mayoría de las personas debido a sus costos muy elevados, pero el R1 busca precisamente democratizar esta tecnología.

The Unitree R1 measures 1.20 meters and weighs around 25 kg, making it considerably lighter than previous models. It can get up on its own if it falls and is capable of executing agile, natural movements thanks to its 26 independent joints, more than enough for complex and fluid maneuvers. It can walk, run, dance, do somersaults, and practice martial arts, which personally scares me quite a bit. Its lithium battery allows it to operate for about an hour before needing to be recharged, and the battery must be changed manually.

El Unitree R1 mide 1,20 metros y pesa alrededor de 25kg, siendo bastante más liviano que modelos anteriores. Puede levantarse solo si se cae y es capaz de ejecutar movimientos ágiles y naturales gracias a sus 26 articulaciones independientes, más que suficientes para lograr maniobras complejas y fluidas. Puede caminar, correr, bailar, hacer volteretas y practicar artes marciales, cosa que personalmente me da bastante miedo. Su batería de litio le permite funcionar durante cerca de una hora antes de necesitar recarga y el cambio de batería debe hacerse manualmente.

It incorporates a multimodal artificial intelligence model capable of recognizing images and voice, allowing interaction through spoken or visual commands. It can also learn new tasks through imitation or reinforcement, simplifying its customization and adaptability. It's equipped with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 for a modern, fast connection. It can be controlled remotely and has a quick-stop button in case you want to "stop" the robot instantly. (I'd also add a self-destruct button.)

Incorpora un modelo multimodal de inteligencia artificial capaz de reconocer imágenes y voz, permitiendo interacción por comandos hablados o visuales. Además, puede aprender nuevas tareas por imitación o refuerzo, lo que simplifica su personalización y capacidad de adaptación. Está equipado con WiFi 6 y Bluetooth 5.2 para una conexión moderna y rápida. Puede ser controlado a distancia y dispone de un botón de apagado rápido por si se quisiese “detener” al robot instantáneamente. (Yo también añadiría un botón de autodestrucción).

For now, the Unitree R1 doesn't seem capable of anything useful other than jumping, because it's designed more as a development and experimentation platform, as well as a tool for learning advanced robotics, than as a household chore assistant. However, its possibilities are broad and limited only by creativity: from event entertainers, museum guides, educational assistants, to prototypes for customer service or artificial intelligence research.

Por el momento, el Unitree R1 no parece que sea capaz de hacer nada útil aparte de brincar, está pensado más como plataforma de desarrollo y experimentación, así como instrumento para el aprendizaje en robótica avanzada, que como un asistente de tareas domésticas. No obstante, sus posibilidades son amplias y limitadas solo por la creatividad: desde animadores en eventos, guías en museos, asistentes en labores educativas, hasta prototipos para servicios al cliente o investigaciones en inteligencia artificial.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but this does seem potentially very dangerous to me. I don't even want to think about what this robot would be like in the hands of robbers, murderers, and other low-lifes. Will we each have to have a robot to defend us from the neighbor's robot? Will we see robot police chasing robot thieves? Honestly, with news like this, I don't know whether to get excited or run and hide in the surrounding mountains. As they say in my homeland: "May God catch us confessed."

Tal vez sea porque me estoy haciendo mayor pero esto si que me parece potencialmente muy peligroso, no quiero ni pensar como sería este robot en manos de atracadores, asesinos y otros personajes de baja estofa. ¿Tendremos que tener cada uno de nosotros un robot para que nos defienda del robot del vecino?, ¿Veremos a robots policías persiguiendo robots chorizos?. Realmente con noticias como esta no sé si entusiasmarme o echar a correr y esconderme en los montes circundantes. Como dicen en mi tierra: "Que Dios nos pille confesados".
