Successful test of the first Chinese Lunar Module.

China has just taken a decisive step in its race to land on the moon with humans before 2030. On August 6, Chinese engineers successfully completed the first full landing and takeoff test of a manned lunar module, something unprecedented for the country.

The protagonist of this achievement is the Lanyue, whose name means "embrace the moon", a robust and versatile prototype capable of transporting two astronauts between lunar orbit and the surface, functioning not only as a vehicle, but also as a habitat and operations center on the Moon, to simulate the real conditions of space, the test was carried out in a facility in the province of Hebei, where mooring towers reproduced the low lunar gravity and a terrain full of craters was built to avoid the uneven ground of the surface.

During the simulation, all Lanyue systems, engines, thrusters, navigation, control and propulsion were tested together, showing accuracy in engine shutdown and stability during descent and ascent.

Images transmitted by CCTV showed the ignition of the engines and a hint of nitrogen dioxide coming from the propellant used. The Lanyue module was designed for much more than the transport of astronauts on the lunar surface, it will be a power source, data center and scientific operations platform with the capacity to carry rovers and research payloads.

An external ladder will allow the descent of the taikonaut, while its integrated propulsion module will guarantee precise maneuvers for landing and return to orbit. The mission strategy foresees two launches with long-range rockets, the first will send the Lanyue to lunar orbit, the second will carry the manned spacecraft that will dock with the module, from there, two astronauts will continue on board the lunar landing.
