The first agreement to extract Helium 3 from the Moon

On May 5, 2025, Interlune, a company based in Seattle, announced a new agreement with the United States Department of Energy to deliver Helium 3 extracted from the moon, it would be in the year 2029, extract Helo 3 from the Moon and bring it to Earth in 2029, that would be an epic feat more than taking humans to the Earth but more than taking humans to the moon because well, with the Apollo programs we have already seen humans on the moon but extract space mining extract 3 and bring it to Earth.

Yes, it would be epic because at least from my point of view scientific exploration is good, but also if the activity in space is made profitable, we will have economic resources to be able to maintain that activity and make it grow, it is what would really drive the expansion, colonization or the human being's journey through the solar system.

Interlune is going to collect 3 Liters of Helium 3 from the lunar soil to bring them to Earth in the year 2029, its objective is to dedicate itself to the commercial extraction of space resources mainly focused on lunar mining, its main objective is to collect Helium 3 which is an isotope of helium that is scarce on Earth, it does not really exist on Earth, it only exists in artificial conditions extracted from nuclear plants as a byproduct and a very scarce byproduct, but it turns out that it is abundant on the Moon.

Helium 3 is expelled by the sun with the solar wind. The point is that the Earth has a protective magnetic field that prevents the solar wind from reaching the Earth's surface, which is good, but as a consequence, Helium 3 never reaches the Earth's surface. However, the Moon does not have a protective magnetic field and therefore has been literally covered in helium 3 for billions of years, just like Mercury and the same as the surface of asteroids.

They want to use helium 3 for quantum computing to also obtain fusion energy, it is one of the elements that can be used to obtain fusion energy and in addition this company plans to extract other mineral resources such as rare earths and water, it may sound strange to extract water that is profitable to extract water in space but obtaining water is going to be the main resource that people who live in a base will need, whether on the Moon or on Mars and to extract any resource you will need a mining job so you have to call this company.

Last month Interlune also announced its partnership with Wermer Corporation, which is a manufacturer of industrial equipment and in fact they have already developed an excavator capable of absorbing 100 metric tons of soil, since to extract Helium 3 many tons of lunar soil must be processed. This machine that you are seeing in the image can process those 100 tons and extract about 20 kg of helium per year.

Sending that machine to the moon to extract 20 kg a year seems crazy because it is going to cost a lot of money and it is a bit crazy, but keep in mind that 1 kilo of helium 3 currently costs about 30 million dollars, most of the available helium 3 comes from the disintegration of tritium in nuclear reactors, whether to obtain atomic weapons or nuclear energy and very little helium 3 is produced, in fact, there are strategic reserves of helium 3 in the United States and Russia But we do not know the exact amount. What we do know is that they do not exceed 200 kg. We talk about 100 or 200 kg at most. That is all there is in the world and it is intended as a strategic reserve for scientific and industrial purposes.
