Robots building solar parks and data centers in space

British robots are being prepared to build gigantic structures in space on their own, such as gigawatt-scale solar farms, orbital data centers and even future facilities on Mars, this is no longer a futuristic theory. The United Kingdom took a concrete step to transform that vision into reality by successfully demonstrating that high-precision robotic arms manage to assemble space structures without any human intervention. What was science fiction is now cutting-edge engineering in action.

The project that is attracting global attention is called AlbaTrust, a partnership between the United Kingdom's Atomic Energy Authority and the startup Space Solar, the proposal to create gigantic solar satellites composed of hundreds of thousands of modules capable of operating in orbit without depending on the Earth's weather.

These satellites not only capture constant sunlight in space where the sun never sets, but also transmit that energy to Earth using microwaves in real time 24 hours a day, each solar panel in space can generate up to 13 times more energy than its equivalent here and on the ground, the goal is for the first functional prototype with 30 MW of power to be operational until 2029 and reach gigawatt scale already in the next decade, in tests carried out at the Cohan campus in Oxfordshire Two-armed robotic manipulators demonstrated their ability to assemble modular lattices, critical components of orbital megastructures.

Space Solar also showed that its power transmission system is capable of electronically steering 360º aces, increasing the efficiency of delivering wireless power directly to receiving antennas on Earth, that approach eliminates the need for human maintenance emissions, reduces risks and increases the economic visibility of mounting large-scale space infrastructure.

These robots operate based on remote control, but evolution is moving towards total intelligent autonomy, without the need for oxygen, resistant to radiation and tireless, they represent the future of construction in space and the United Kingdom is not alone. NASA, for example, is developing the Armada program that seeks to assemble autonomous structures with modular parts, and at the Southwest Research Institute it is working to create similar systems for the lunar surface.

The convergence of these technologies indicates that humanity is in fact entering the era of orbital manufacturing, the promise goes beyond exploration, that technology can redefine the supply of clean and constant energy for the Earth, helping to guarantee energy security on a global scale, it does work and everything indicates that yes, the next works of human engineering will not be on Earth, but in the vacuum of space.

Solar satellites are just the beginning, robots will be able to build lunar stations, Mars colonies, orbital data centers, space factories and other facilities essential to sustaining life and technology beyond Earth.
