On the new DARPA plane

Imagine an aircraft capable of taking off like a helicopter, crossing the skies at high speed like a jet and then simply folding its propellers in the air to reduce drag and gain even more performance, that's exactly what Bell is about to test in the real world.

The X-Plane, a revolutionary project that combines the versatility of vertical landing with the speed of a fighter, has just received the green light from DARPA to advance towards flight testing. This aircraft is part of the SPRINT program, Speed and Track Independent Technologies, a collaboration between DARPA and the United States Special Operations Command.

The idea is to create an aircraft that does not depend on runways, but that reaches speeds typical of jets. Bell adapted the concept of another of its aircraft and replaced the traditional nacelles with fixed rotors with an innovative system of rotors that can stop and fold in mid-flight, this drastically reduces aerodynamic drag and allows the plane to reach up to 833 km/h, something unprecedented for this type of vehicle.

The secret is in the hybrid system, the rotors act only during takeoff, landing and low speed maneuvers, when the aircraft enters cruise mode, the rotors stop and fold, transforming the plane's profile into something cleaner, ideal for speed and stability, this not only improves performance, but also reduces the radar signature, making the X-Plane more stealthy.

Bell has already carried out tests on the ground and in wind tunnels, validating the aerodynamics and behavior of the aircraft, now with the approval of phase two, the production of the prototype begins, its certification and finally the demonstration flights with the capacity to operate in remote areas, difficult terrain and even naval platforms, hostile environments, where a traditional helicopter would be too slow and a jet unviable.
