What do you do when you invent something that doesn't work? Throw it away, cry, hide it from humanity? Well, be careful, because by changing the perspective, that failure can become an icon of design and can make you a multimillionaire.
In the 70s, a scientist from the 3M company, Spencer Silver, was trying to create a super-powerful adhesive, something revolutionary that could be used for airplanes, space probes, heavy machinery and that would not come off with anything, but what he achieved was the opposite, a weak glue that adhered a little, but came off too easily and without leaving a trace, an absolute disaster, right?
Instead of getting frustrated, Spencer started showing her silly glue around the office, in case anyone thought of what it could be used for, but of course, no one came up with anything. Why would anyone want glue that didn't stick? Until years later, another 3M worker, Artur Fry, came on the scene. He was a singer in his church choir and was tired of dropping the little pieces of paper with which he marked the songs in his song book.
One day, during the priest's sermon, he remembered that strange adhesive and thought, who knows if out of boredom or divine inspiration, and if he used it to create bookmarks that stay stuck, but can be taken off without tearing the pages of the book, he would have just invented the Post it.
Today these sticky notes generate about 1 billion dollars annually, they are sold in 27 different sizes and colors, they are so popular that in 2014 the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language added the word posit, which is what we call it in Spain, to the dictionary, and it all started with an inventor who failed miserably in the only thing he had set out to do.
