Rosa 'Peace' is a rose cultivar that's gained global admiration not only for its stunning beauty but also for its symbolic significance. Created in France in 1935 by horticulturist Francis Meilland, this rose variety has a remarkable history that intertwines with major world events. Known for its large, fragrant blooms with colors blending creamy yellow and pink, the Rosa 'Peace' has become one of the most beloved roses worldwide.
The Story Behind Rosa 'Peace'
The origins of Rosa 'Peace' are as intriguing as its appearance. During the 1930s, Francis Meilland, a young horticulturist from the Meilland family of rose breeders, began working on developing a new rose variety. He selected the rose for its unique and striking appearance, which would later earn it recognition. Initially, Meilland had no idea how special this rose would become or how far-reaching its symbolism would extend.
As World War II loomed, Meilland feared that the destruction of war would prevent him from sharing his prized rose with the world. In 1939, as Germany prepared to invade France, Meilland sent cuttings of his new rose to friends and contacts in Italy, Germany, and the United States to ensure its survival. The rose was eventually cultivated in different countries, making it through the war despite widespread devastation.
When the war ended in 1945, the rose was introduced to the public in Pasadena, California, on the very day that the United Nations was formed. Its introduction was symbolic, and the rose was aptly named 'Peace' as a representation of hope and new beginnings after a time of destruction and suffering. That timing gave the rose a deeply emotional significance, as it embodied the ideals of unity, optimism, and the resilience of the human spirit.
