In the world of writing, writing related to our work is no stranger to plagiarism. According to wikipedia, plagiarism is an activity of plagiarism or taking of essays, opinions, and so on from other people and make it seem like their own essays and opinions.

Plagiarism can be considered a criminal offense for stealing other people's copyrights. In the world of education, plagiarists can receive severe punishment such as being expelled from school/university. Plagiarismeh is evil, in any field.

Perpetrators of plagiarism called a plagiarist. In short, plagiarism is the theft of someone else's essay.

Any original essay is considered the property of the author and may not be reprinted without the permission of the author or the publisher of the work.

Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is deliberate plagiarism and after 2 × 24 hours of newspaper news circulating, one can take over on the condition that it identifies the source. Plagiarism also does not refer to only written works but also works of music, designs, etc.

The Scope of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is not a good thing to do. So that you know more about plagiarism is a bad act, then we find out the scope of plagiarism.

  • Quoting other people's words or sentences without using quotation marks and without mentioning the identity of the source.

  • Using other people's ideas, views or theories without mentioning the identity of the source.

  • Using facts (data, information) belonging to other people without mentioning the identity of the source.

  • Recognize other people's writings as their own.

  • Paraphrasing (changing other people's sentences into their own sentences without changing the idea) without mentioning the identity of the source.

  • Submit a scientific work that is produced and / or published by other parties as if it were his own work.

Types of Plagiarism

Quoted from lib.ugm.ac.id according to Soelistya (2011) there are several types of plagiarism, namely:

* Word for word Plagiarism

The author uses the words of other authors (exactly) without mentioning the source.

* Plagiarism of Source

The author uses the ideas of others without giving sufficient recognition (without clearly stating the source).

* Plagiarism of Authorship

The author acknowledges that he is the author of other people's written works.

* Self Plagiarism

Included in this type are the authors publishing one article in more than one publication editorial. And recycle scientific papers.

What is important in self plagiarism is that when taking one's own work, the resulting new work must have a meaningful change. This means that the old work is a small part of the new work that is produced. So that readers will get new things, which the authors really pour on papers that use old works.

So the question is, why is plagiarism often encountered? Even though it is clear that plagiarism is an intellectual crime, namely stealing other people's work.

Usually this plagiarism occurs for several specific reasons, either because of laziness, limited processing time, to low reading interest.

For students or everyone, plagiarism is a common thing. This is due to the limited time needed to complete a scientific work and it becomes a burden on their responsibilities so that students like it or not, just copy and paste other people's work so that it can finish quickly.

You could say this is the beginning of laziness, this is supported by low interest in reading and interest in analyzing existing reference sources. As a result, I want it to be done right away.

In addition, a lack of understanding about when and how to do quotes has made plagiarism more frequent.

Plagiarism is also caused by a lack of attention from teachers or lecturers to the problem of plagiarism.

How to Prevent Plagiarism

Whatever the reason someone commits an act of plagiarism, there is no justification for that action. Therefore, so that plagiarism can be prevented, follow these 5 tips.

1. Include citations

When someone uses ideas, information, even opinions that are not their own thoughts, citation is a must. This also applies even if the author does not use the exact same words. Inclusion of citations here means that the author must provide information from where the written information was obtained.

These sources are not only for books, journals, theses, or audio / visual recordings, but also citations for ideas from the internet should also be included. Writing citations is also important when the writer is in doubt about the accuracy of the information presented. The citations can be in the form of body notes or foot notes.

2. Note the various sources of bibliography from the start.

Bibliography is one of the obligations that should not be forgotten when writing a paper. Unfortunately, there are still those who re-enumerate the bibliography after writing is complete. Such a thing is not wrong, but it has the potential to miss one, two, or several sources at once.

In that sense, the resolution has been listed in the body note or foot note but is not listed in the bibliography. By recording what sources were used from the start, errors can be minimized, and it will also be very helpful in preparing a bibliography.

3. Paraphrase

Posts that only use direct quotations are more likely to be considered plagiarism.

The way to react is by paraphrasing - using your own sentence structure - from the original source while still including the citations.

Paraphrasing is also easier to do because the format is not as complicated as using direct citation.

4. Interpret

To strengthen the ideas conveyed, sometimes there are opinions that must be used as comparison or borrowed. In this case, the analysis may be too complex or require additional interpretation. Interpretation is carried out as necessary.

5. Use an anti-plagiarism application

Finally, if the author is still worried about the final result of his writing, an anti-plagiarism application can be tried.

With the anti-plagiarism application, the resulting writings can be compared with previously published writings. The application will show you what percentage level of similarity was found.
