Rice Farming in Indonesia: Between Domestic Needs and Export Potential

The most widely cultivated crop in Indonesia is rice In Indonesia, rice is the most widely cultivated crop in terms of national strategic crops as an agricultural country with most of its population using rice as a staple food

With such a large population, most of whom are rice eaters (an agricultural country), rice is a national strategic crop originating from the islands of Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi which have fertile soil as their environment.

It is no secret that rice production in Indonesia is at a level sufficient in many cases to meet domestic needs, but seasonal factors (or even bad weather conditions) make the government import rice repeatedly from other countries. In fact, Indonesia can produce a rice surplus, aided by a good harvest and a fairly high rice stock from last year's harvest season. Indonesia has recently started exporting small amounts of rice to several other countries such as Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste. However, the purchase price is higher, especially for export-quality rice when they sell it directly to cooperatives or institutions.

Farmers need systematic training on the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and international quality standards for growing crops ready for export, knowledge on the application of fertilizers & pesticides according to specifications, and good post-harvest management.

Likewise, training on certification and how to pack/what to include in the goods that agricultural products should carry, so that they can be accepted in the global market.

However, farmers face various obstacles in sending their goods to the world. Some of these are — access to international markets, underdeveloped agricultural infrastructure, and lack of knowledge on commercial behavior. In addition, the global market itself can put additional pressure on prices as well.

The government can address these challenges by strengthening agricultural extension and extension services, mandating technology subsidies for agriculture, simplifying export offerings, and establishing special agencies to support farmers in obtaining certification for export marketing. that cooperation between farmers, investors, and the private sector must be carried out to meet domestic agricultural demand in Indonesia but also be competitive in the global market.
