At the heart of rural life in Bangladesh lies agriculture. For nearly 80% of the country’s population, it is the main source of livelihood. And at the core of this agriculture is rice. Right now, it's the harvesting season for IRRI rice, and the golden hue of ripened paddies spreads across the fields of rural Bengal. In the late afternoon, as the sun leans westward, its crimson rays fall upon the golden rice fields. This creates a scene that resembles a fairytale kingdom. In this enchanting realm, the sweat-drenched dreams of farmers begin to take shape in reality.

This time is not just about harvesting for the farmer—it is a season of celebration. At dawn, as the mist begins to clear, farmers can be seen heading out to the fields with sickles in hand. With towels wrapped around their heads, they cut rice across vast fields. Fields upon fields are filled with harvested rice, waiting to be transported. Later, these sheaves will be carried home on ox carts or tractors. Compared to previous seasons, this year's rice yield has been much better. The weather has been favorable, resulting in a bountiful harvest for most. This rice will feed the families for the whole year.

Use of Information Technology in Agriculture

In recent times, there has been significant progress in agriculture in our country. Farmers now receive timely advice from the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. As a result, they know exactly when to apply fertilizers, which seeds to use, and the right time to use pesticides. All this information helps them carry out their farming activities more efficiently. Where previously the yield was 10 to 15 maunds per bigha, now it has increased to 25 to 30 maunds per bigha. Behind this transformation lies the relentless work of our Agricultural Research Institute and modern technology. Not only in our country, but even in many developed nations, such technology has brought about major changes in the agricultural sector.

Problems and Concerns

One of the major problems and concerns in agriculture lies in pricing and market value. It is often seen that right after the rice is harvested, the market crashes. The price of rice drops significantly. As a result, those farmers who produce more than their own needs do not get fair prices. This leads to financial losses for the common farmer. Therefore, the government must take effective measures in this regard. The existing market syndicate system must be dismantled, and a fair and transparent market system must be established.

The Impact of New Rice on Rural Life

When new rice is harvested, it brings a festive atmosphere to rural areas. Farmers bring home the freshly cut rice, and soon the celebration of new rice begins. Families become busy preparing traditional rice cakes (pithas) made from the newly harvested grains. This golden rice brings smiles to the faces of farmers and their families. A wave of joy spreads throughout the village.

Fields filled with golden paddy are not just crops—they represent the backbone of Bangladesh's economy, the symbol of rural life, and the dreams of countless farmers. Therefore, it is essential to ensure fair market prices and maximum government support for these farmers. Only then will this golden crop truly become gold in the farmer's home. With increased enthusiasm toward farming, we will witness real progress in our country's economic development.
