Il pruno, nome comune utilizzato per indicare diverse specie del genere Prunus, è una pianta appartenente alla famiglia delle Rosaceae. In particolare, con il termine "pruno" si fa spesso riferimento al Prunus domestica (susino) o al Prunus spinosa (prugnolo selvatico). Entrambe le specie sono diffuse in Europa e in Asia, e sono apprezzate sia per la loro fioritura ornamentale che per i frutti commestibili che producono.

Il pruno si presenta generalmente come un arbusto o un piccolo albero, con un’altezza variabile tra i 2 e gli 8 metri a seconda della specie e delle condizioni di crescita. Le foglie sono alterne, di forma ovale o ellittica, con margini dentellati e di un verde acceso. In primavera il pruno si ricopre di una spettacolare fioritura: i fiori, di colore bianco o rosato, sono piccoli ma numerosi, e crescono singolarmente o in piccoli gruppi lungo i rami, creando un effetto visivo molto suggestivo.

I fiori attirano anche numerosi insetti impollinatori come api e farfalle. Alla fine della fioritura la pianta sviluppa i frutti, le prugne. Nei pruni selvatici i frutti sono di solito più piccoli e dal sapore acidulo, mentre nelle varietà coltivate possono essere dolci, succosi e di dimensioni maggiori.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, il pruno è una pianta rustica e adattabile. Predilige posizioni soleggiate e terreni ben drenati, anche se tollera discreti livelli di calcare. La potatura leggera, effettuata dopo la fruttificazione o in inverno, aiuta a mantenere la forma della pianta e a favorire una buona produzione di fiori e frutti. La pianta è resistente al freddo e può essere coltivata anche in zone collinari e montane.

I frutti del pruno sono ricchi di vitamine, in particolare vitamina C e vitamina A, oltre a sali minerali e fibre. Possono essere consumati freschi o utilizzati per la preparazione di marmellate, succhi, dolci e liquori, come il tradizionale "prunello". Inoltre, alcune varietà selvatiche sono usate anche come portainnesti per altre specie del genere Prunus.

The plum tree, a common name used to refer to various species within the Prunus genus, is a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. In particular, the term "pruno" often refers to Prunus domestica (European plum) or Prunus spinosa (blackthorn or sloe). Both species are widespread in Europe and Asia and are appreciated for their ornamental blossoms as well as their edible fruits.

The plum tree generally appears as a shrub or small tree, with a height ranging from 2 to 8 meters depending on the species and growing conditions. The leaves are alternate, oval or elliptical in shape, with serrated margins and a vibrant green color. In spring, the plum tree is covered in a spectacular bloom: the flowers, white or pinkish in color, are small but numerous, and grow singly or in small clusters along the branches, creating a very charming visual effect.

These flowers also attract numerous pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. After flowering, the plant develops its fruits—plums. In wild plum trees, the fruits are usually smaller and have a tart flavor, while in cultivated varieties, they tend to be larger, sweeter, and juicier.

From a cultivation perspective, the plum tree is hardy and adaptable. It prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils, although it tolerates moderate levels of limestone. Light pruning, performed after fruiting or during winter, helps maintain the shape of the plant and encourages good flower and fruit production. The tree is cold-resistant and can also be grown in hilly or mountainous areas.

Plum fruits are rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C and vitamin A, as well as minerals and fiber. They can be eaten fresh or used to prepare jams, juices, desserts, and liqueurs such as the traditional “prunello.” Additionally, some wild varieties are used as rootstock for other Prunus species.
