Stop waiting to be chosen, go for it.
Sometimes you're the reason why you missed an opportunity.
A big conference was organized and the speaker was called out to represent the show. He was a handsome young man, wearing a well-fitted suit.
In his hand, he held a few books. Everyone looks excited because this is an inspiring show, and they will all go home with a life-changing experience.
The show started, and everybody went silent, paying attention to the speaker. He shares life experiences and financial education. Everybody feels excited about his speech...he must be professional, isn't he?
But that was just the beginning.... At a particular point, he asked, "Who wants this book?"
Everybody knew that the book must be a gem. It's either he's the one who wrote it or he had read it and he knows it will benefit the reader. But here is the problem. He came with only 5 copies and it's about 100 people who gather for this conference.
So when he asked who wanted this book, everybody raised their hands up, signifying that they wanted it. I guess you and I would do the same.
But 2 people got up and walked straight to him, received the book, and went back to their seats.
After the two people walked up to collect the books, the speaker said something that struck me:
"You all raised your hands hoping I’d choose you, but sometimes, life doesn’t work like that. You don’t wait to be chosen — you walk up and grab it."
That moment made me think... How many opportunities have we missed just because we didn’t take a step forward?
I pass through this missing opportunity:
- Maybe someone told you about a legit online job, but you ignored it. Missed.
- You saw a free course link that could’ve changed your life, but you scrolled past it. Missed.
- You had access to someone experienced, but pride or fear stopped you from reaching out. Missed.
- You wanted to learn a skill like editing, trading, or design, but you kept postponing. Procrastinating, missed.
Sometimes, opportunity shows up once — quiet, short, and disguised as effort. If you don’t move, someone else will, grab it and you end up losing it.
So whatever you want, go for it.
Don’t wait to be picked.
Don’t just raise your hand and hope — walk up and take it.
It's funny, right? They don't wait for opportunity; they chase it, they make an approach, and they walk to it to receive the gem.
The presenter was like.....you guys are raising your hands as if I have a choice to choose anybody there... sometimes you just need to walk to get what you want.
We're so familiar with the statement: opportunity comes but once. No doubt, when it comes, you either grab it or you lose or miss it. How do you miss an opportunity?
Just like this audience I used earlier, the book cost thousands of naira, but they were at a point when they could just get it free, but they missed it. How? Because they didn't make an attempt, they want to be chosen.
But the one who made an approach was able to grab the opportunity. What can you and I learn from this example?
Is there anything you're planning to accomplish? Make an approach
Do you need help? Reach out
You want to be popular? Make yourself visible.
Don't always wait to be chosen; try to show that you know what you can do and are willing to do everything to achieve it.
Conclusion
So, next time an opportunity arises, don't just raise your hand; get up and grab it.
I don't want to make it longer, but so that everyone can read and understand. You have questions? You want to share your thoughts? Am right here with you.
Thank you for reading, though it's not your popular content you normally see.

I find what you wrote confusing. One time you seem to write about what you read, next it seems as if you were present, but somehow I don't believe you were. Since it isn't written in a way you experienced this.
No, I wouldn't raise my hand to get a copy of that book.
I also don't understand why it matters what the speaker looks like. It makes me suspicious. If looks matter it means most of what he said is b-shit.
You also don't seem to know what the speech was about, except that one should grab his chance. But when is it your chance? If you are the brutal one, if you are disliked, sued, the police will drag you out because you misbehave and your greed makes you dangerous?
It all depends and if you ask me this "grab your chance" is meant in a different way, more like: Act instead of sit, complain and pray god or someone else will come to your aid.
