Hello stemians
It's my first time participating in a poetry contest hope my work resonates
Special Memories of My Life
There’s a basket in my heart, woven with time,
Holding memories I guard, gentle and prime
First laugh of a child, my mother’s warm gaze,
Footsteps on red clay on sun-bleached days.
The taste of rain falling on my tongue,
Songs that I hummed when I was young,
Grandfather’s stories by lantern light,
How we all huddled close on harmattan nights.
There was a time I fell, scraped my pride,
But love found me, brushed tears aside
Strong arms carried me through my fears,
Taught me to rise above my tears.
Dancing in church, white lace, bare feet,
Singing with voices so clear and sweet
Simple joys that fed my soul,
Kept me human, kept me whole.
The hustle of city, the calm of the village,
Days of dreaming beyond the average,
First page I wrote, shaky and raw,
The words unpolished, yet full of awe.
Old friends I lost, new ones I gained,
Sunshine after countless rains
All these moments, bright and dim,
Became my story, my living hymn.
Some memories hurt, they sting like fire,
Some lift me higher and higher,
But all of them matter, all of them true,
Without them, who would I be, who?
I stand here, woven by threads unseen,
A patchwork of places I have been
Of lessons I learned, and those I forgot,
Of laughter, of pain, of things I sought.
Today I pause, and let them speak,
The silent voices, bold yet meek
They shape me still, in ways unknown,
Like roots that hold a tree full grown.
If tomorrow is dark, I will still stand tall,
For these memories cannot fall
They live in my blood, they burn in my chest,
Reminding me, I have been Blessed
Why I Wrote This
I wrote this poem because there are moments in my life I never want to forget. The memories of growing up, of family, friends, even heartbreak they all built me into who I am today. Sometimes we move too fast and forget to honour these little details that shaped our spirit. Writing them down, giving them voice, is my own way of preserving them before they fade.
I believe sharing my memories might remind someone out there that their own story matters too. Life is not only about the big wins, but about the small, quiet pieces that fit together to make us whole. That’s why I poured my heart into these words to celebrate every bit of my journey, no matter how ordinary or extraordinary it seems.
These lines are personal, real, and written from my heart to yours.
