Artificial intelligence and blockchain technology can be used to oversee general elections and regional head elections in the future. Technological advances must begin to be used to maintain the purity of the people's voices.
In elections in a number of countries, even non-developed countries, blockchain technology has been used, for example in the recapitulation of vote counting. Indonesia should also be able to adopt technological advances.
"If it can't be done in voting, at least in the recapitulation of vote counting. If it can't be implemented nationally, at least in several cities where the technology supports it," explained a member of the Lhokseumawe City Bawaslu, Ayi Jufridar, in the Mozaik Indonesia talk show with the theme of Democracy Credibility Amid Technological Advances which took place at RRI Pro 1 Lhokseumawe, Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
According to Ayi, there needs to be optimization of the use of digital technological advances in overseeing electoral democracy in Indonesia. He admitted that he had proposed the use of blockchain technology in the vote counting recapitulation when he was still a member of the Independent Election Commission (KIP) of North Aceh Regency in 2018.
"Unfortunately, there has been no implementation in that direction even though the technological infrastructure in some regions in Indonesia is adequate," added Ayi in a talk show hosted by Rudi Saifannur.
Blockchain technology has great potential in improving election data security, transparency, and public trust in the election process. "Some countries have implemented it in e-voting and the results of the vote counting recapitulation are stored in blockchain technology," he said.
Ayi also touched on the strategic role of the mass media in supporting participatory supervision in the 2024 general election and regional elections. According to him, the mass media in Lhokseumawe City carried out its function professionally in supervising the electoral process through news.
"That one or two media outlets are unprofessional because they openly support certain candidates, that is the dynamics. There are media owners who are also the leaders of certain parties," said Ayi again, who has had a long career as a journalist.
When asked by Rudi about the attitude of the millennial generation who are apathetic towards politics and democracy, Ayi reminded that concern for politics is part of concern for the interests of the younger generation.
"It doesn't matter whether you will enter the world of politics or not later. But the political process must also be monitored by the younger generation because many policies are born from political decisions," he concluded.[]
