"This or That " contest Week -2 - Is it better to live in a village or a city?
Steem greetings, guys from the motherland, Cameroon and welcome to my blog as I participate in the contest "Is it better to live in a village or a city?". Life in the village setting can be fascinating, yet it can also hinder your progress in life. People migrate from the village to the city in search of better opportunities. Notwithstanding, the city, to an extent, is not a haven; it has its shortcomings, and some people prefer to live in the village.

I will do a comparative analysis of life in the village and life in the city, listing some advantages and disadvantages. I prefer to stay in the city now as my working age will permit me to hustle and build a better future for my kids, but when I'm retired, I will prefer to stay in the village.
Advantages of Living in the Village |
---|
There are several advantages of living in the village, as will be explained in the subsequent paragraphs.
- The first is that the cost of living in the village is minimal and cost-effective in the sense that most often, empty or unoccupied land is abundant in the village, so one can cultivate food produce, thereby reducing the cost of purchasing food items in the city at exorbitant prices.
- Another advantage of staying in the village is that the environment is calm and less noisy compared to the noise of urban cities.
- Village social and cultural activities are a good reason to keep me during retirement at the village to witness those cultural nights at the palace, especially during the summer holiday in Cameroon.
- Last but not least is the abundance of varieties of food items. The land in the village setting is fertile and favours the growth of different food crops like tubers, fruits, and vegetables.
Disadvantages of Living in the Village |
---|
- Poor network connectivity due to a lack of sustainable electricity supply. Most often, my village suffers from poor network connectivity, which compounds your vulnerabilities.
- Limited opportunities in the village for a better life, though the cost of living in the village is low but it has limited opportunities for a dynamic, young and energetic man.
- Poor road networks and a lack of a good source of drinking water are other disadvantages of living in the village. It is common for one to see ageing mothers carrying heavy loads on their heads returning from the farm because there are no farm-to-market roads.
Advantages of Living in the City |
---|
- The presence of several facilities and amenities makes the city a better place to live. For instance, good schools for your kids' education, good health facilities, and a good road network to facilitate movement from one neighbourhood to another. These amenities are easily accessible in the city than in the village.
- There exist several job opportunities in the city compared to the village. Most enterprises and businesses operate in the city, and therefore, it is advantageous to grab a job opportunity in the city rather than in the countryside.
- It is easier to network in the city than in the village because in the city, it is easy to come across different people in the same profession.
Disadvantages of Living in the City |
---|
- High crime wave as different people come together with different ambitions and motives. Though the security of the city is prioritised by the government but the rate of kidnappings for ransom and indiscriminate killing, and torture is alarming.
- The cost of living in the city is extremely high due to high rents inflated indiscriminately by landlords, and food prices are always expensive.
- The cities are often congested and too noisy due to the presence of industries.
- More stress and pressure to meet the daily demands of life in a city.
In a nutshell, life in the city can be fascinating because we live to deal with lots of fantasies, which also comes with a cost to pay. Likewise, the village is peaceful and quiet, good for retirement age, but has several disadvantages, which have compounded vulnerabilities. I am inviting @pelon53, @suboohi and @shiftitamanna to participate in the contest.

But to me here, there most be a purpose that makes someone to reside in a particular location.
