The Medieval Market of Castellón
Hello everyone. Recently we visited a medieval-themed market in Castellón province. It's located in the eastern part of Spain in the Valencia region. It was quite an interesting market. A lot of things especially the participants costumes, were from the Middle ages. We wandered around and observed everything with curious eyes. There were events and concerts and handmade products and foods were also available. Many items from that era were present, such as shields, a wheel and other objects in the center of the square.
There was also a resting area, arranged like a medieval camp. This fair is a traveling one, meaning it takes place in different cities and towns. We had seen announcements in Granada and other places, but we couldn’t go there. Here, handmade products seemed to be for sale, but maybe they were just for consumption. There were different activities, such as children shooting with bows. They missed the target a bit, but that was okay. There were also different birds, all of them alive. We saw a huge owl. It was amazing.
There were games for children, like throwing ropes at nails. There were also many performances. Medieval musicians entertained the public. Nearby wine was being served and it was quite nice. We moved on to the market selling handmade and non-handmade items. There were all sorts of products, like piercings and items made from horns. Handmade wooden items were also being sold. Such crafts are rare these days, but they were available at this market. There were also sweets, like cotton candy.
There was a small farm with chickens, rabbits, goats and geese. Children could feed these animals. I’m not sure what happened to the geese, maybe they eat them or continue on their journey. Many sweets were being offered, like dates, kiwi, fruits and vegetables. There were also chewable candies. At one place, there were sweets and cheeses and we could taste them. We could also try different types of sausages there.
Next door there was a very interesting show where it looked like they were taking a criminal to execution. They were going to execute this man. I don't know what crime he committed, but unfortunately, his end was near… Leaves and other things had been thrown on him. Musicians continued their music in the medieval streets.
The dishes were quite striking. At one stand, they were roasting chestnuts, which we bought and they were delicious. Corn was also being roasted, so everything was fine. There were also different types of sweet churros available.
In the massage booth next door, quite thorough massages were being done. There was also beer and liquor for sale and it looked like meat was being sold too, maybe prepared to order. People were eating, so everything was made to order. We passed by the lemonade and beer stands. There were communal dining tables where various flavors were being cooked.
The old-fashioned small ferris wheels were also interesting. Then there were sweets, although not exactly in the medieval style, they were interesting. On one side metal workers were working and various handmade products were displayed. The medieval market spread out into the streets, but as we moved forward, we were moving away from the medieval theme. Still interesting toys, big breads and jewelry made from stones were beautiful.
Many performances were taking place and the event lasted for several days. There were dances, sword performances, fire shows and acrobats... These kinds of events are held in many places, so if such a fair is nearby, I definitely recommend you come and see it for yourself. We really liked it. Have a nice day and see you soon.
