Hi guys.. How are you doing today? Am sure you've been good.. Am so excited to participate in this week contest. So, today I will be picking the word "Computer". In this post, I will explain the meaning of computer and other features of computer. Just keep on reading;

A COMPUTER

A Computer is an electronic device that transforms data, process data by doing some mathematical and logical operations and gives out information as it's output. The computer we see today is quite different from the one made in the beginning due to modernity. The impact of computers in our day to day life must be appreciated because computers has become extremely useful to man. However, there's one limitation to computer. This is because human beings do calculations on their own, but a computer is a dumb machine that has to be given a proper instructions to carry out its calculation.

HISTORY OF COMPUTER

The history of computer is been traced back to the effort of man to count large numbers. This process of counting of large numbers generated many systems of numeration which includes the Greek system, Roman system, Indian system, Babylonian system. Computer solves all calculations based on decimal system, but the computer does not understand the binary system of numeration. Before the invention of computers, they were early counting devices which were in use and some of them includes;

• Calculating machines: This was the first early counting device discovered by the Egyptian and Chinese people. This device is known as "Abacus".

• Napier's bone: This device was discovered by an English mathematician known as "John Napier" for the purpose of multiplication in the year 1617.

• Slide rule: This was invented by "Edmund Gunter". This machine performs functions like addition, multiplication, substraction, and division.

• Pascal's adding and subtracting machine.
• Babbage's analytical engine.
• Mechanical and electrical calculator.
• Modern electronic calculator.

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER

• Speed: As you all know, computer is known to work very fast. It only takes few seconds for calculations that we take hours to complete. The computer can perform millions of instructions and even more per second. Therefore, the speed of a computer is determined in terms of micro-second or nano-second.

• Accuracy: This is another aspect of the computer that works faster. Computers are meant to have accuracy because is being determined on the basis of design of computer.

• Versatility: This further means the ability to perform completely different type of work. Computer is versatile because it can be use to prepare payroll slips and the next moment, use for the inventory management of paying bills.

• Diligence: Computer being free from tiredness, fatigue, etc. Hence, it can work for hours without any error. If millions of calculations were to made, a computer will still perform every calculation with the same accuracy.

• Storage: The computer has an in-built storage memory where it can store a large amount of data. It stores data in secondary devices. The memory of the computer is very large.

• Power of remembering: Computer has the power of storing any amount of data and information. No matter the number of years the information had been in the computer, it can recall those data.

IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTER TO THE SOCIETY

The invention of computer has brought about various benefits in the modern world. Some lg them includes;

• Computers enables efficient data storage, retrieval, and enhance communication.

• It facilitate data analysis, connectivity, by driving economic growth and societal progress.

• With the help of computers, it enables communication by e-mails, messages, and video calls, and making the world more connected.

• Computers have supported to online learning, research, and educational software, thereby making knowledge and understanding more accessible to everyone.

• Business and Economy. Computers has enhance productivity, handle data management, and support online banking.

• Computers has contributed to entertaining man, from gaming, streaming, watching funny videos, digital arts, etc. Indeed, computers have revolutionized the entertainment industry.
