Healthy nails reflect good body condition. There are several nail diseases that occur due to things like infection or trauma and some of them are related to other health conditions. The following are some common nail diseases.

Category Nail Symptoms and Causes
Lee and onychomycosis (dermatophyte fungus that grows under the nail, occurs in people who are often in humid environments)
Caused by dermatophyte fungus that thrives under the surface of the nail, most often found in people who often wear damp or wet socks.
Paronychia (Nail Infection)
Bacterial infection due to minor injuries such as torn nails or nail biting.
Onycholysis
The nail separates from the nail bed due to fungal infection, trauma, or allergic reaction to chemical products.
Nail Psoriasis
Related to the autoimmune disease psoriasis, causes nails to thicken, become discolored, or develop pits.
Brittle Nails
Can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, frequent exposure to chemicals, or excessive water exposure.

Symptoms of Nail Disease
Discoloration to yellowish, blackish, or whitish
Thickened or brittle nails
Pain or swelling around the nails
Nails that break or peel easily
Unpleasant odor due to infection

Treatment
Fungal Infection: Use of antifungal creams/medicines by a doctor
Bacterial Infection: Topical and/or oral antibiotics
Nail Psoriasis: Topical application of Corticosteroids or Phototherapy treatment
Very dry nails: Treat with cuticle oil and biotin supplements

Prevention
Keep your nails clean and dry after washing your hands or feet
Wear footwear in damp public places such as swimming pools
Avoid biting or picking at your nails
Wear gloves when in contact with chemicals
Eat foods rich in Vitamin B, Iron, and Protein
Healthy fingernails are just as important to take care of as your skin and hair. There is nothing to worry about, see a doctor immediately if you notice any strange symptoms.
