Water is wonderful element that we human come across since our childhood. Actually even as embryo we are swimming in amniotic fluid. That already means that we can swim and hold our breath.
Water is wonderful and it gives us an opportunity to feel no weight and be able to move and enjoy weightlessness. It is also noticeable that if we want to swim as a competition then it is not very easy because we have to fight against the whole heavy weight of water itself. That is why we need good musculature of our arms and legs.
Also in some cases like in people with heavy weight water gives a great opportunity to exercise and train our muscle too. For many people with children water is just leisure element.
When swimming we train following part of our body:
muscles of your arms but also shoulders
muscles of your back because you have be able to use your upper body and hold at the surface of water
muscles of your legs because they have to work to make sure you are moving forward
During swimming we make deep breath and hold breathing, therefore our lungs also have to work hard to oxygenate our body with oxygen and to be able to make CO2 to get out of body.
I was not able to swim when I was young but later I learnt it, maybe the whole reason was I was very anxious and I hate water going in my ears, nose, and sometimes I drunk water by accident.
Of course, for learning I went to pool and it was my father who taught me swimming. I can swim confident in pool but I am anxious of swimming in open water, because I need to feel the bottom of water reservoir. I love going swimming and really enjoy it.
I go into water where it is up to my chest level and I try to swim forward. Often in order to become the confidence I need to lie on back on water and spread my legs and arms like a star, that usually helps to keep my body just of the surface. Also I try to spen about 30 sec to one minute under water without breathing, that helps to find our anxiety. Just do regular swimming.
