A balanced diet, good sleep habits, and regular fitness can help maintain a balanced life.

There's no argument in it. They sound simple to follow too. But the reality is, they are hard to maintain. Compromising with food and sleep became a regular life choice in our modern way of living. Also, we throw away fitness out of the window.

As a result, the rate of obesity is rising. And it's very concerning. Obesity is one of the first things that increase the risks of heart disease, diabetes, etc.


Before going further, let's have a simple look on-

What is a obesity?

You may have heard about Body Mass Index (BMI). That's the scientific measure to know if a person is obese or not.

BMI 30 and above means one is obese and 25-29.9 means overweight. Under 25 is a healthy body.

It's a height and weight ratio. You can easily calculate yours by following:

BMI= weight in kg/(height in meters)2

For example, my weight is 65 and my height is 5 feet 2 inches(1.5748 meters). That means, my BMI would be 26.2. I fall into the overweight category.


How does Obesity affect health?

I'm not obese but as an overweight, I too face many physical and mental health problems. However, I have Hypothyroidism which works as a challenge to maintain a healthy weight. But I know, there's no excuse to live a healthy life.

Let's see how obesity affects our health.

  • The first thing is heart problem. Obese people would face this, as a must if they don't follow a healthy lifestyle.

  • High blood pressure, cholesterol, risk of stroke, and heart attack increase by 50% for obese people.

  • Also, sugar intake can cause type 2 diabetes and if they already have it, then the disease will get worse.

  • Joint pain, muscle aches, breathing issues, and sleep apnea would be common.

  • Also, lack of motivation, depression, and sleeping disorders would affect them.

Fortunately, I became health conscious when I reached 35 last year. Now, I eat healthy, exercise, and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle.


Effective ways to get rid of this problem.

There's no magic but maintaining a consistent healthy routine could do the magic. It's hard to follow but it's possible if anyone has the right intention.

1. Healthy eating

It's a must. You don't have to go extreme and cut off everything you like.

Just reduce carb intake and add a lot of protein and vegetables to your diet. Also, cut off sugar intake and drink only healthy drinks like tea or juice.

2. Be active, be fit

Going for a morning walk, and doing free hand exercise is enough to maintain a healthy life. But if anyone is too obese then, they must take professional support, go to the gym, and be active to solve the health problem.

3. Sleep and mental health

Obesity has a direct connection with our sleep. Compromising with sleep not only makes us mentally unstable but also increases hormones that increase our body fat.

Having proper sleep and maintaining good mental health helps a lot.


Some people go the extra mile and do intermittent fasting to lose weight. What I personally follow is maintaining a balance. Don't go too extreme, have a proper diet and sleep, be active & do some exercise, and take care of your mental health. I believe that's the key.
