My Tour In UUTH
Greetings Friends, It my earnest pleasure joining this challenge and I wish you read this extensive blog post to the end
Purpose Of Visit |
---|
If you have even been to the city of Uyo, you will agree with me that the University of Uyo teaching hospital is not just among the top 3 biggest hospitals in Akwa Ibom State but also a hub of healthcare excellence and clinical excellence, and due to its evolution in the past year, it has also served as a beacon for numerous medical research. The purpose of visiting here was to get access to their facilities and take pictures for the purpose of this blog post, and this was done aloneside a friend of mine studying medical lab sciences at the University of Uyo on Monday 28th, April 2025 as we strolled through this place
A More Concised History |
---|
Before the name the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital came about, it was initially known as Akwaibom Specialist Hospital during the administration of Yakubu Bako before the change of name to UUTH in recent years to get full accreditation for medical students in the university. This learning hub/medical centre was founded in 1994 and upgraded to a teaching hospital in 2008. To prove to you that this medical centre has a wide range of medical facilities, I will be sharing and expounding on the different departments in this post accompanied by a picture to visualise it.
A Stroll Through Facilities, Departments and Infrastructures |
---|
Following the order of pictures I took, I will be taking a more comprehensive look at UUTH's departments. Though it has 21 clinical and 4 non-clinical units supported by various specialised units, I will be listing but a few of which I was able to access through my camera lens.
Clinical Department and Specialised Unit: This department focuses on providing primary health care to patients through diagnosis and treatment.
- Accident and Emergency Unit: This signpost looks new, and it clearly states that the newly renovated and equipped structure is a function of Nigeria LNG Limited. This is a sustainable development program in the UNIVERSITY OF UYO TEACHING HOSPITAL(UUTH), on 12th December, 2023, roughly a year and some months. Since there is a training ground for all medical students, all the facilities are put in place to avoid the disaccreditation of this particular department. Those facilities in place are electric suction devices, nebulisers and anaesthetic machines. This unit of the hospital also has a theatre with a bed recovery area in case of more accident cases or emergencies and also an oxygen piping to enhance healthcare on this aspect in the hospital.
- Dialysis Unit: The dialysis unit specialises on intensive care to patients with kidney problems. They have dialysis, monitoring and other equipment that enable them to filter blood and track patients' blood pressure; this equipment includes dialysis machines, vital signs monitors like thermometers, etc., and catheters, which are the few I can recognise.
- Medical Laboratory: In this place, you are likely to find students with different medical disciplines, a pathologist, clinical microbiologists, and med lab scientists who could also be virologists and haematologists and offer blood transfusion services.
- Psychiatry: The psychiatry complex is another standout facility that has outpatient clinics and male and female wards; in this department, there is security that guards this place in case of a breakout from patients, and there are special nurses, psychologists and social workers here, making it very modern.
- Dental Clinic: We also have a dental clinic, a separate facility that has wide facilities in place; they have x-ray machines and dental chairs, which are very common, sterilisation equipment, and every kind of dental ailment is being treated here, including surgery, and regular checkups are done here.
Non-clinical department
National Health Insurance Scheme
National Health Insurance Scheme: One of the non-clinical departments that captivated me was the insurance unit. It is very common for Nigerians not to insure their health, and I am glad this hospital can provide it; it will be a symbol for people to look at and take action; the staff are always at their working desks with files.
Pharmacy: The pharmacy is a very broad department with interns, pharmacists, and professional pharmacists there to distribute prescription drugs to patients and also for research to compare these drugs to ascertain side effects and functionality.

Mini Store/Market: Other infrastructures are put in place to make the hospital a complete place. To curtail patients' stress of looking for some basic things, the hospital has a mini store that sells everything edible. Mothers may want to purchase babies, and so this market is meant for any kind of purchase.
Note: The market and mini store are sited in different places and have very distinct products.

OPD sit/waiting room sit
OPD: We have the outpatient department, a very broad place where patients not admitted or those who come in for check-ups sit patiently waiting for when they will be called to see the doctor. This department is attached to the clinical complex that has a residence, sick bay, nurses' station and some wards; the outpatient department's sitting space is wide to prevent communicable diseases.
Ambulance Bay: The hospital has an ambulance, and though I wasn't opportuned to see it, it is always parked in its bay, and the drivers are always very responsive.
Surrounding: Speaking of the environment, cleaners are on standby to make sure there are no nylon papers on the grass; you can see clearly from this photo that the environment is serene. Apart from the fact that grasses sprout out this rainy season, the shearer and land mower are continuously doing their work.
Water Supply Unit: Lastly, I would give a display of some parts of the water supply unit over time. The teaching hospital has evolved to its now maximum water supply of 200,000 litres daily; this should tell you how massive this place is; the display on the signpost justifies this.
Power Supply Unit: What can you see? I can see a supply unit that has over 4 Lister generators and some internal generatorstheseis engines seem to be waterproof as well, as there is no shade coverinthemit.
This ends the descriptive section of my Blogspot. The hospital is always open at all times, but visiting hours are different in some departments.
Opening Hours |
---|
The emergency department is always open.
The outpatient department is open from Monday to Friday; any case brought in the last 2 days of the week is considered an emergency, which could be subject to referral or be treated
Psychiatry opening hours are from 8pm to 4pm.
In summary I would say this has proven to be a hospital that provides quality and wide varieties of medical service with its high class infrastructure, so I will recommend it to the resident of Uyo and people visiting Akwaibom State for the First Time
