Write about Pancreas Diseases:

The pathophysiology is very simple in pancreatitis. We have inflammation of the pancreas so anytime you see the word ITIS just think inflammation. So in pancreatitis this inflammation comes from autodigestion of the pancreas.

What do we know about diseases of the pancreas?

Basically the pancreas is its own digestive enzymes have accidentally activated early. Now as you know the main functions of the pancreas are exocrine and endocrine, the exocrine part is to produce digestive enzymes which helps break down food and is a critical part of digestion and the endocrine is for secretion of insulin and glucagon to stabilize glucose balance.

The enzymes are the key here they are like ticking time bombs to break down and digest food but when they're activated early inside the pancreas they actually digest the pancreas.

So the three key enzymes to know are proteas which break down protein. Lipase one of the biggest affected by pancreatitis breaks down fats. So just think lipids and lipase lipid for fat and lastly amas breaks down carbs or carbohydrates now if the pancreatic duct is blocked for any reason say from inflammation in liver curosis or hepatitis or let's just say a G Stone has floated down and got stuck.

Thi means that the enzymes can't get out of the pancreas and into the intestine and accidentally prematurely activate within the pancreas. It's kind of like having these enzyme bombs exploding inside the little pancreas. Here causing supersized inflammation as the pancreas digests itself. This is what is meant by autodigestion.

The causes are very simple again think anything that can block this little tiny pancreatic duck autodigestion.

Here so common causes are alcohol abuse from years and years of inflammation which ends up inflaming the little duct and basically blocking it.

Do you or someone in your family have an issue with your pancreas?

No, one of my colleagues died at young age due to pancreatic cancer.

How do we maintain our pancreas and avoid disease?

What could i have done to prevent pancreatic cancer people often wonder was it something I ate or a habit i had or is this genetic.

What we do know is that pancreatic cancer does not develop from consuming a particular food or drink while scientists are still working to understand how this cancer develops and the best way to treat it

We do know that your genes may play a role as many as 15 percent of pancreatic cancers are related to a family history of the disease. Research tells us that the chance of someone developing pancreatic cancer increases by two to three times if a person's mother father sibling or child had pancreatic cancer

Which genes are linked to pancreatic cancer?

There are certain genes that are linked to increased risk of pancreatic cancer for example the genes responsible for breast and ovarian cancer. Brca1 and Brca2 are also highly associated with pancreatic cancer in fact as many as 10 percent of pancreatic cancers may be associated with brca 1 and 2.

What inherited conditions make someone prone to pancreatic cancer?

Members of families with some rare inherited conditions have a significantly increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Overall genetic testing and or personalized discussion with your doctor is the best way to identify people including those in your family who may be at risk for developing pancreatic cancer.
