Medical Titbit: Let us learn about Sundowning

in Healthy Steem4 days ago

Sundowning is a common abnormal behavior experienced by dementia patients (Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia). People with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder may experience agitation, confusion, or mood swings as sunset approaches (the sun goes down). This phenomenon is known as sundowning syndrome!

During the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be hard to tell. Sundowning is becoming more obvious over time, as the disease progresses! Almost everyone who has Alzheimer’s eventually experiences some sundowning! A person with sundowning may have a better day (fewer symptoms) or a worse day (more symptoms)!

Significant events with many people in the patient’s room, loud noise levels, changes in the usual schedule, physical illness (pain, infection, constipation, sleep loss, etc.), etc., can trigger sundowning symptoms.
