What is Obesity?

Obesity means accumulation of too much fat in the body which is very harmful for our health. Obesity is a condition in which there is a normal or very excessive number of fat in the body which poses a risk to our health.

Obesity is a very common problem nowadays which increases the risk of harmful diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer.

Obesity is detected through body mass index. A BMI of 30 or more is considered as obesity. Obesity can be caused by unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and genetic factors.

How does obesity affect our health?

Obesity affects our health in many ways such as increasing the risk of heart disease (high blood pressure and high cholesterol), diabetes and some types of cancer, as well as problems like joint pain and shortness of breath.

Excess weight puts pressure on the joints, which can lead to osteoarthritis and joint pain. Obesity can also cause sleep apnea and other breathing problems.

Sometimes the social stigma and discrimination associated with obesity also increases the risk of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Obesity also causes problems like liver disease and gallbladder disease.

Some effective ways to get rid of this problem.

To get rid of obesity, effective ways like healthy diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes can be adopted.

Healthy diet :

In a healthy diet, we should reduce the amount of calories and take less calories than the daily requirement.
We should include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, protein and healthy foods in our diet.

Sugar, trans fat foods should be avoided. Fiber-rich foods should be consumed. Fiber-rich food keeps the stomach full, which helps in reducing weight.

Drinking adequate amount of water also helps in reducing weight.

Regular exercise:

Cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, swimming are very effective in reducing weight. One should exercise at least 30-35 minutes every day.

Lifestyle changes:

Our lifestyle has become very bad these days, it is very important to change it, like getting adequate sleep also helps in reducing weight, reducing stress, doing yoga or meditation also helps in reducing weight.

We should remain socially active and spend time with friends and family. To avoid obesity, we can also play outdoor games like cricket, football, hockey, badminton etc.

Smoking and alcohol increase weight, so one should avoid smoking and alcohol.

If you gain too much weight, you can also consult a doctor or dietician to reduce weight.
