What do you understand by heat stroke

Heat stroke is locally known as Sun stroke. In medical field, it is term Hyperthermia. This health condition commonly occurs when an individual exposes his or herself to high temperature or humidity and the body is unable to cool itself properly thereby resulting in the symptoms of hyperthermia. Many people neglects this heat stroke symptoms and carries out their normal activities until when it become severe.

Seeing this contest reminded me of a case we had 4 years ago in our clinic.
During summer heat, a young man of 20 years old was brought to the hospital on the complain of dizziness, body ache, fever and nauseous. After registration, we carried out vital signs and behold, his body temperature read 40⁰C. The doctor in charge, diagnosed him of heat stroke. From the card registration we realised that his is a construction worker.

During questions and examination, his mother told us that he has been laboring in their new house site for 5 straight hours without break nor taking any water which afterward he had the above symptoms. Despite the symptoms, he didn't want to take time off work but he tried to push through the pain.

The mother said that after an hour, his health condition become worsen and he loss consciousness, she decided to take him to the hospital.

We quickly applied cool cloth and ice pack on his armpit, groin, and neck which helped in cooling of his body temperature.

Heat stroke is a serious health condition that triggers when the body's temperature regulation system is overloaded. it's advisable to limit ourselves from the exposure of the hot sun and If we suspect heat stroke, prompt medical attention is necessary so as to reducing risks of long term complicated or untimely death.

Describe the symptoms of this condition.

One of the major symptoms of Heat stroke is High body temperature: it is advisable for an individual to have digital thermometer so as to check change in Body temperature. The normal body temperature ranges from 97.7⁰F to 99.5⁰F in Fahrenheit while in centigrade, it is from 36.5⁰C to 37.5⁰C. This simply means more above this range is abnormal. If your body temperature is above 103⁰F or 39.4⁰C, it might be heat stroke, please contact medical personnel.

Another symptoms is Altered mental state: This is refers to a situation whereby an individual has changes in his level of consciousness, difficult in speaking and disorientation. If an individual exhibit the symptoms especially during summer weather or during strenuous activity, it can be concluded that it is heat stroke.

Nausea and Vomiting another symptoms: This is when an individual has a sudden throw out or feeling like vomiting but not being able to do so. Some people may vomit excess while some feel discomfort and sick in stomach.

Seizures or coma: this is condition whereby a victim completely loss consciousness and can easily result in death.

Tell us the First aid that should be given to the patient

IMG20250417070926.jpgStay hydrated while working under sunlight

The most common prevention is that the obvious factor is to avoid exposure to the sunlight or taking the person out of sunlight.

Give him or her a cool water to drink, provide cold compresses to lower the body temperature or if ice pack is available place it on armpit, groin, and neck, it will rapidly bring down the temperature.

If the heat stroke case happen in the house and there is stable electricity supply, switch on a fan. if it happens anyway outside the house, you can use a hand fan, cloth or light book to fan the person and this will help air to circulate through the body.

Remember to remove tight and heavy clothes from the victim.

If your first aid work and the person regained consciousness, health educate him on break during strenuous activity under hot sun especially from 12 to 3pm, advice on staying hydrated and wearing of light fittings cloth which helps in air to penetrate his skin..

If the victim is unconscious, please don't waste, time, call medical emergency right away and put a sip of water to rehydrate him or her.

Follow and get back when necessary.

I'd like to invite @ulfatulrahmah, @pelon53, @okere-blessing and @josepha to participate in this contest.
