"Importance of Hydration In Summer".
Hello, steemains. Staying hydrated always will help all the organs to function effectively. Summer is the hottest season, which calls for the consumption of enough water due to rapid water loss; stay hydrated during this summer period, my friend, because health then, they say, is wealth.
Why is staying hydrated more important in the summer than in other seasons?
Staying hydrated, especially during summer, is crucial; the body loses fluids through sweating as the body works through temperature regulation, due to the temperature of the body. Sweating is a way in which the body cools down during hot weather, but if the body lacks fluids because of it, dehydration occurs.
The summer period is considered to be the hottest season in the world; in my country, Nigeria, we call it the dry season because the sun affects everything, causing plants not to thrive because of the increasing temperature the sun provides. It is essential to stay hydrated in summer because of the high temperature and humidity that causes the body to sweat, fluids that are been lost in the body's process of regulating temperature need to be replaced which is when hydration comes to play its crucial role in stabilizing the body temperature and balancing the water and salts in the body.
It is in summer that the body also loses a huge amount of electrolytes in the body that helps to maintain fluid balance, through hydrated that can be achieved. Hydration is a mechanism of supporting metabolic functions, i.e., anabolism and catabolism, temperature regulation, i.e., between 36°c to 37°c, and maintaining overall health, i.e., helping organs, cells, and tissues to work efficiently, aiding the performance of exercise, ensuring adequate muscle functioning, nutrients delivery, and joint lubrication.
During summer, the heat and sun exposure can dehydrate the skin, which will then cause it to become dry and prone to damage. Hydration will help you have clean, smooth, and healthy skin, preventing skin disorders and enabling the pigment melanin to work effectively.
How much water do you try to drink daily in the summer? Do you follow any routine?
During summer, I consume a lot of water; having a routine is fine by me, but I don't have one. What I do is that I drink a cup of water earlier in the morning before eating breakfast, it has been discovered that drinking water before breakfast helps to wash away waste materials stored in the body. I just consume water when I know I am thirsty. This helps me to drink to my satisfaction, avoiding drinking too much water.
What are your favorite hydrating foods, drinks, or beverages during hot weather?
To deal with degradation consume some drinks and beverages to help body temperature regulation. The best choice of fluids is water, which is considered a universal solvent, fruit juices, milk, and some herbal tea. I consider water the primary choice for hydration and see others as daily fluid intake.
Water & Coconut Water |
---|
Water, which is credited for its natural qualities of making the body look nourished, is classified as the most fundamental and effective way of staying hydrated. It is even the most important and useful source of staying hydrated; all other drinks and fruit juice contain water, which means hydration can't be possible unless water is involved. Coconut water is known for its richness in vitamins and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chlorine. This makes it an excellent choice for staying hydrated. I used to consume this at least twice a week when I traveled to the village with my parents, but now I only consume it four times a month; it is mostly consumed after exercise, according to health experts.
Fruit Juice & Milk |
---|
All fruits contain vitamins, but it is advised that you don't consume fruits that contain high amounts of sugar as it may cause diabetes, which means that you are to consume fruit with less sugar. This is why my best fruit is orange fruit juice which contains potassium that helps the body stay fit and decreases dehydration. Milk, which is mainly produced by cattle (dairy-based) and plants, is essential for our overall health, providing us with protein for the growth and development of young ones, especially growing kids and adolescents. It is very essential for staying hydrated, plant-based milk is a good source of electrolytes like calcium. I consume these sometimes because of their nutrients and sweet taste.
Herbal tea and smoothies |
---|
Herbal tea and smoothies are some of the natural drinks that I consume to stay hydrated. Herbal teas like peppermint and chamomile are good hydrates, especially when consumed in a warm state; they help to keep the body temperature stable, blending with its present temperature. Smoothies are mainly produced with plants or dairy milk, sometimes water and fruits that are good hydrating to start your day in the evening.
How does dehydration affect our body? And how to overcome that situation?
Dehydration is a process that happens when the loses more fluids than the one that is ingested, causing the deficiency of electrolytes and water. Dehydration often causes dark urine, dizziness, thirst, and even loss of consciousness. This is why we all need to rehydrate to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes through water and oral rehydration. When the human body is dehydrated, it leads to dry mouth, thirst, and even fatigue. When our body becomes dehydrated for a long time, it causes headaches, confusion, dizziness, and constipation. Dehydration especially in summer causes the kidney to stress itself which purifies the body and can lead to kidney failure.
Dehydration can cause the brain not to work effectively leading to dizziness and loss of consciousness. Most times, when I don't take water for a long time since the water is not treated, especially when I am far from home, I experience muscle cramps and weakness. The human body needs water and salt to balance digest absorb nutrients. Dehydration, therefore, hinders nutrient absorption and causes severe constipation. When we lack water to stay hydrated to maintain body temperature, the body develops low blood pressure and shock because of the heat produced during summer.
Overcoming Dehydration |
---|
Dehydration can be overcome and controlled by the consumption of water and other fluids throughout the day, mostly in summer and after exercise. We can consider using oral rehydration solutions or sports drinks to replace lost electrolytes to maintain a good hydration level. Overcoming dehydration is not difficult; engage in eating foods with high water, like fruits and vegetables. Drinking water before you become thirsty will help overcome dehydration in summer, it has been discovered that drinking water before you become thirsty will tackle dehydration efficiently because when you are thirsty it means you have already been dehydrated, I usually wait till am thirsty, I will work on my self to maintain overall well-being and quality health. We should not forget to always seek medical attention for severe dehydration, particularly if you experience confusion, loss of consciousness, or severe vomiting.
