MOSES' LEADERSHIP STYLES
8 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”
10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword."
Exodus 17:8-13 (NKJV)
We could see in our text, when the Amalekites rose against the Israelites to fight or war with them in Rephidim, in their wilderness journey (Exodus 17:8). Moses with his lieutenants or assistants went up to the mountain, while he instructed Joshua to organize and take the force, the armies, to the war front and combat the Amalekites (Exodus 17:10,13).
Now, we could see and learn how any confrontation from the opposition should be handled. The physical aspect should be done, which is the release of the organized armies, while the spiritual aspect should not be neglected as well. Mostly, today's church would want to focus on the physical aspect alone, neglecting the spiritual aspect—being on the mountain before God to ask and receive His backings or supports.
In addition, we could see that what was determining the tempo, extent or measure, of the battle was not the fierceness or agility of the Israelites armies, but the hand of Moses that was raised or lifted to God for His divine intervention (Exodus 17:11).
A ministry leader's hand should always be lifted up to God in prayer for His intervention in the matters of the people under his or her leadership (1 Timothy 2:8).
You should take advantage of the night time, stay awake, and talk to God about the matters of the people committed to your trust by God. Pray for them, that is one of the reasons or purpose why God has appointed you to oversee or lead them (Acts 20:28; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 5:2).
Another thing to note in the passage is, Why must It be Moses' hands? Why not Aaron's or Hur's hands? When Moses' hands were heavy, he could have given the rod to either Aaron or Hur to be lifted.
The truth is, there are things to be delegated in the ministry work and there are other ones that should not be delegated.
The business aspects of the ministry work can be delegated, but the aspect of praying; staying in the presence of God in order to trash out the matters of the people with God in prayer and fellowship, should not be delegated:
2 THEN THE TWELVE [apostles] SUMMONED THE MULTITUDE OF THE DISCIPLES AND SAID, “IT IS NOT DESIRABLE THAT WE SHOULD LEAVE THE WORD OF GOD AND SERVE TABLES. 3 THEREFORE, BRETHREN, SEEK OUT FROM AMONG YOU SEVEN MEN OF GOOD REPUTATION, FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WISDOM, WHOM WE MAY APPOINT OVER THIS BUSINESS; 4 BUT WE WILL GIVE OURSELVES CONTINUALLY TO PRAYER AND TO THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD" (Acts 6:2-4 NKJV).
A ministry leader does not delegate prayer and the word of God. He or she must be able to spend quality time daily in the study of the word of God and prayer. If you are the one assigned or commissioned by God, He always wants to see your hands up before Him in prayer (1 Timothy 2:8); to commune with Him and always give Him the feedback on how the work is going and how the people are faring and for any new instruction on the next line of action that would be communicated to you.
In the case of what happened to the Israelites in the wilderness, that is, in the matter of fighting with the Amalekites:
a. The business aspect of it is the organizing of the armies and the going to the battle field or war front which was delegated to Joshua (Acts 6:4).
b. While the spiritual aspect that should not be delegated is the going to the top of the mountain by Moses, Aaron, and Hur (Acts 6:4).
Some ministers are busy, they are major on the minors whilst they are minor on the majors. Hard work in the ministry is not running around or carrying cement or being the one doing the menial works in the ministry.
The core ministry or assignment of those who are in the fivefold ministries is to equip the saints, the believers, for the work of ministry:
11 AND HE [Jesus] HIMSELF GAVE SOME TO BE APOSTLES, SOME PROPHETS, SOME EVANGELISTS, AND SOME PASTORS AND TEACHERS, 12 FOR THE EQUIPPING OF THE SAINTS FOR THE WORK OF MINISTRY, FOR THE EDIFYING OF THE BODY OF CHRIST" (Ephesians 4:11,12 NKJV).
Many ministers are not equipping the people under their leadership, as a result of it, they are the ones doing everything. They could not have enough time for the study of the word of God, the Bible, and prayer. Are you guilty of this? Start equipping the people today.
Peace.
